ONONDAGA COUNTY – Without question, it was good for the Baldwinsville girls soccer team to have a week of recuperation and recovery after its emotional win in the inaugural Ava Wood Memorial Tournament on Aug. 29-30.
By the time it returned to action last Wednesday against reigning sectional Class AA champion Fayetteville-Manlius, the Bees were rested and ready to move ahead.
Holding its own throughout the night, B’ville got a goal from Jean Neville, yet still lost 2-1 in overtime, victimized mainly by the brilliance of veteran Morgan Goodman.
Goodman poured in both of the Hornets’ goals – one in regulation assisted by Macey Davey, the other coming in overtime off a penalty kick.
B’ville’s goalie, Alyssa Luce, stopped everything else, finishing with eight saves, while F-M counterpart Mackenzie Murphy had seven saves.
This was the only road game B’ville faced in its first five as it returned to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium last Friday for a match against Central Square.
And the Bees put together a confident all-around performance, blanking the Redhawks 4-0 led by Kelsey Dwyer, who would amass three goals for a hat trick, converting in each half.
Nadia Guzman had the other goal, assisting on one of Dwyer’s tallies, while a steady B’ville defense limited Central Square to just four total shots, all stopped by Luce and Rachel Helbig.
West Genesee, at home, provides another key test for the Bees two nights before it travels to Liverpool.
