ONONDAGA COUNTY – It hasn’t taken long for the Baldwinsville girls tennis team to realize that it’s not as far away from Fayetteville-Manlius as in some seasons.
Meeting each other on the first day of September, the Bees and Hornets each played to their strengths, but it was the depth of the Hornets in doubles that made a difference as B’ville took a 4-3 defeat.
Up in singles, the Bees quickly got two points from Mira Nadzan, who routed Trisha Adavikolanu 6-0, 6-2, and Alya Kalfass, who rolled past Shreya Bhattachayra 6-3, 6-3.
In a three-set doubles battle, B’ville’s duo of Sonia Nadzan and Lainey Nesbitt did enough to beat Julia Kim and Sadie Toole 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
However, the Hornets took the other doubles points. The Bees’ teams of Livia Zoanetti-Ella Clary and Carly-Ann Smith-Juliette Pawelek had just four games in four combined sets.
Layla Trendowski and Carmela Budzich fell to Anokhi Dalal and Erin McLain 6-3, 6-2, while in singles Laine Zoanetti could not get on the board against Selena Chen in a 6-0, 6-0 defeat.
B’ville easily prevailed in its next match Tuesday afternoon, taking out Nottingham 7-0. Clary went to singles and routed Lucy Lombard 6-0, 6-1, with Kalfass handling Layla Forbes 6-1, 6–0 and Mira Nadzan blanking Hsay Wah in a pair of 6-0 sets.
Of the contested doubles matches, only Trendowski and Laine Zoanetti gave up any games, but still topped Maria Trunova and Alisha Forbes 6-1, 6-0. Shutouts were earned by Nesbitt and Sonia Nadzan, plus the duo of Pawelek and Livia Zoanetti.
A trip to Henninger next Monday begins a busy week where B’ville is also home to face two main rivals, Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool.
