ONONDAGA COUNTY – The Christian Brothers Academy girls basketball team, who is headed for the Section III Class A playoffs later this week, was quite impressive last Tuesday against New Hartford, prevailing 60-38 over the Spartans.
The Brothers outscored New Hartford 31-10 in the second half after a close start, Chiana Williams again leading the way as she got 27 points and was helped by Carmella Fairbanks, who earned 11 points.
Yet when CBA went up against “Holy War” rival Bishop Ludden on Friday night, it got overwhelmed in a 71-25 defeat, no one scoring more than William’s total of six points as the Gaelic Knights’ 2,000-point scorer, Amarah Streiff, led her side with 24 points.
Fayetteville-Manlius lost 39-33 to the same West Genesee side it beat a month earlier, unable to hold 20-14 halftime lead as the Wildcats, led by Isabella Quinones (16 points), outscored the Hornets 12-2 in a decisive third quarter. Evie Kawa, in defeat, hit three 3-pointers on her way to 17 points overall.
At Baldwinsville on Saturday afternoon, F-M had a chance at a quality win against a proven opponent, and managed to earn it, edging the Bees 42-40.
Having lost to this same B’ville side 41-27 in January, the Hornets surrendered just six points in the second quarter and, by doing so, grabbed a 22-19 advantage.
All through the second half, F-M answered whenever the Bees converted as Kawa finished with 12 points, Morgan Goodman got 10 points and Ashley Schneider added nine points. Carlie Young (15 points) and Kyrah Wilbur (13 points) paced B’ville.
Bishop Grimes gained a 61-49 win over Syracuse Academy of Science last Friday, night, improving to 6-12 on the season as the Cobras steadily gained a 45-29 advantage on the Atoms through three quarters.
Offensively, Kierra Baxter led the Cobras with 20 points, helped by 17 points from Aaliyah Zachery and 12 points from Olivia Bitz as Angelina Delledera finished with seven points. For SAS, Eniya Eudell had 16 points and Shayla Baker got 12 points.
A day later, the Cobras had its own game with New Hartford and dropped a 54-47 decision to the Spartans, who used a 15-7 push through the second quarter to take charge.
