CENTRAL NEW YORK – For the second time in as many weeks, Jordan-Elbridge wrestler Jack Lamson stood out among individuals during a championship meet.
In this case, it was Lamson, a junior, named as Most Outstanding Wrestler during last Saturday’s Section III Class B championships at Central Valley Academy as he worked his way to the 138-pound championship.
Having won similar honors at the Jan. 28 Onondaga High School League meet, Lamson used two pins, including one in the semifinals over Camden’s Bradley Reader in 61 seconds, to reach a tough final against CVA’s Cooper Reed, where, earning a 9-4 decision, Lamson improved to 37-1 on the winter.
Joining Lamson in the win column in the Class B meet was Marcellus junior Colin Scherer, who prevailed at 126 pounds. Moving to 29-1 this season, Scherer beat Homer’s Hunter Lines 7-2 in the semifinals and claimed a tough 3-1 title bout over Camden’s Kolton Kelley.
On the team side, J-E was fourth with 132 points and Marcellus sixth with 108.5 points, each of them well back of the battle at the top as CVA, with 234.5 points, beat Camden’s second-place 218.
In a battle for third place at 189 pounds, the Eagles’ Angelo Turo pinned the Mustangs’ Caleb Posecznick as Lucas Witter got third at 110 pounds when Mexico’s Kyren Stock defaulted due to injury.
Three other J-E wrestlers – Dylan Nolan (126), Micah Muhlnickel (132 pounds) and Henry Smith (145 pounds) – had fourth-place efforts, with Liam Mantell getting fifth place at 110.
Marcellus had Jayden Abbott finish second at 172 pounds, beating Colin Murphy (Homer) 11-3 in the semifinals before getting pinned by South Jefferson/Sandy Creek’s Travis Montone in the finals.
It was Trevor Rankin beating Muhlnickel with a second-period fall for third place at 132. Chris Doshna (152 pounds) and Elliott Barbosa (160 pounds) joined Posecznick as fourth-place finishers.
Meanwhile, in the sectional Class AA championships, West Genesee got titles from Logan Willis and Maxx Fesinger on the way to a fifth-place finish as host Cicero-North Syracuse unseated Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA as team champions.
Wrestling at 126, Willis pinned Collin Zeman (Baldwinsville) in 89 seconds in the semifinals before topping Eric Kozlowski (Fayetteville-Manlius) for the championship with a third-period fall.
Up at 145, Fesinger handled Auburn’s Brad Boyhan 12-2 in his semifinal and, like Willis, won in the title bout thanks to a third-period fall as he beat J-D/CBA’s Mason Porter.
Austin Fesinger nearly joined his brother at the top of the podium, advancing to the finals at 110 before J-D/CBA’s Matt Dougherty shut him out 6-0.
At 160, Jacob Severson finished fourth for the Wildcats, with Dylan Radcliffe fourth at 132. Harrison Card beat F-M’s Sam Reikes 7-5 for fifth place at 118 while Joe Martini beat J-D/CBA’s Chris Grosso 13-2 for fifth place at 138, sixth-place finishes going to Giovanni Capria at 160 and Raul Colon at 172.
