CAMILLUS – Having a full roster, as the West Genesee boys swim team possesses, can really help when the other side has a strong core of individuals.
That was the case in Tuesday night’s meet between the Wildcats and visiting Cicero-North Syracuse, who claimed most of the individual titles but could not match WG’s depth as the hosts won by a score of 97-85.
In the first seven events, the Wildcats won only once, in the 200-yard freestyle, where Gavin Flanagan went one minute, 59.37 seconds to beat the 2:03.77 from the Northstars’ Anthony Gabrielli.
Later, Flanagan prevailed again in the 500 freestyle, going 5:17.23 as Matt Keiling was second in 5:49.28. And in the 100 breaststroke, David Martin’s 1:10.15 beat out the 1:11.81 from C-NS’s Donavan Medina.
For the most part, though, WG built up second and third-place finishes, including diving, where Ethan Martin’s 235.75 points was just behind Nathan Oronski’s 246.40.
Ryan Goshow took second in the 200 individual medley (2:22.06) and 100 backstroke (1:03.30), each time behind C-NS’s Jacob Griffin, while Martin was second in the 100 freestyle in 56.03 seconds.
Ryan Limpert got second in the 50 freestyle in 26.02. Angus Tarolli, in 1:06.31, was just behind C-NS’s Anthony Gabrielli (1:04.84) in the 100 butterfly.
Limpert, Flanagan, Korzeniewski and Seth Burlingame nearly won the 200 freestyle relay, going 1:45.44, just one-hundredth of a second behind C-NS’s 1:45.43, but in the 400 freestyle relay Martin, Goshow, Keiling and Flanagan had the quickest time of 3:53.49.
Meanwhile, swimmers from Skaneateles starred on the Weedsport boys swim team that faced Baldwinsville last Tuesday night, led by Gavin Van Kersbergen.
In the 200 IM, Van Kersbergen sped to a time of 2:02.64 that beat the 2:06.03 from the Bees’ Mikey White, and in the 100 butterfly Van Kersbergetn won in 54.46 seconds to White’s 55.95.
Another Skaneateles swimmer, Liam Byrons, would have the quickest 500 freestyle time of 5:45.09 as he joined Van Kersbergen, the Lakers’ Jacob Gordon and Nolan Carner to go 3:40.20 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Having improved to 4-3 on the season, WG is back in action next Tuesday at Oswego.
