CENTRAL NEW YORK – Bowling teams from East Syracuse Minoa and Fayetteville-Manlius both picked up victories in the opening days of the new year.
And so did Christian Brothers Academy, who saw Eliana Occhino roar to a 701 series in her team’s big 5-2 victory over Homer in a clash of top Onondaga High School League sides.
Occhino had nearly 20 strikes in her first two games, shooting 249 and 245, before closing with a 207. That topped every other individual as the Trojans’ Olivia Hamilton led her side with a three-game total of 480.
The CBA boys lost 7-0 to Homer, though Zach Mulhern shot a 544 series with games of 178, 171 and 188. Tom Dearnaley had a 527 series and Jake Mason a 498 series as Kyrius Townsend led the Trojans with a 619 series and John Bishop’s 597 series included a first-game 267.
F-M swept West Genesee last Tuesday at Green Lakes Bowl as, in the boys match, Xavier Greene gave the Hornets a 209 opening game and 236 second game in his 611 series, which edged the Wildcats’ Alex Bigelow (609 series).
Overall, F-M beat the Wildcats 7-0, aided by Adam Koss shooting a 211 in his 557 series. Ryan Yenny peaked with a 195 in his 528 effort as Sean Bird had 174, 170 and 180 in his 524 set.
Meanwhile, the girls Hornets had Samantha Estock shoot a 188, 205 and 137 in her 530 series, far ahead of her teammates though behind WG’s Lorelai Leskoske, whose 253 second game highlighted a 654 series.
At Flamingo Bowl a day later, F-M’s boys defeated Liverpool 5-2 to move its record to 7-3, Koss shooting a 215 opening game on his way to a 545 series and Colin Gunderson earning a 508 series and high game of 179.
F-M’s girls lost 7-0 to Liverpool, though Estock remained consistent, earning a 556 series with games of 198, 190 and 168, which only trailed the Warriors’ Kenzie Gill, who had a 615 and high game of 236.
In a pair of matches against Baldwinsville on Friday, the F-M boys lost 2-1 despite Yenny shooting the best individual series of 641 that included games of 235 and 226. Koss had a 597 series (224 high game) and Bird shot a 221 in his 536 set.
Estock was just as good in the girls match, her games of 200, 191 and 222 producing a 613 series. Yet F-M still lost 3-0 to a Bees side that got a 265 game from Elizabeth Hildreth and 236 game from Julia Speich to go with a 597 series from Jenna Speich and 579 series from Samantha Hass.
When the boys Hornets beat Cortland 7-0, Bird led with a 589 series with no game higher than 202. Yenny’s 244 led to a 546 series as Gabriel Williams started with a 211 on his way to a 573 series.
ESM’s girls team shut out Syracuse 7-0 last Tuesday at Strike-N-Spare Lanes. Haley Borkowski set a season mark in her third game, shooting a 246 as part of a 492 series as Alana Tubreville, with a 394 series, edged Jewelianna Hallock’s three-game total of 391.
Then the Spartans topped Central Square 5-2 on Thursday afternoon. Hallock opened with a 201 on her way to a 516 series, while Tubreville’s 169 was part of a 447 set.
Bishop Grimes met Solvay last Wednesday and split that match, prevailing 4-3 on the boys side led by Dom Beitz, who finished with a 215 in his 550 series, and Bruno Kinsey, whose 549 series had games of 204 and 199.
Tom Kolodze started with a 194 in his 492 set. Meanwhile, the Grimes girls team lost 5-2 as Lania Young led her side with a 374 series.
Then CBA got its turn against Solvay, and Occhino shot 226, 216 and 197 in a 639 series that was part of a 7-0 shutout.
A close boys match saw CBA lose, 4-3, to Solvay, who overcame Ryan Mulhern’s 204 and 226 games in his 579 series as Zach Mulhern had a 190 in his 520 set and Mason improved to a 500 set.
