UTICA – Starting 2023 in the best way possible, the Liverpool indoor track and field teams swept large fields in the fourth Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association meet of the winter Friday at Utica University’s Hutton Dome.
The girls Warriors had 93 points, well clear of runner-up Rome Free Academy’s 57.5, while on the boys side Liverpool had 87 points, beating Marcellus (60) and more than 20 other challengers.
For the second time in as many weeks, Allie Cary swept the girls throwing events, repeating her Dec. 28 Westhill Invitational effort by going 37 feet 7 inches in the weight throw to beat Trinity Howard’s second-place 34’5” and taking the shot put with 34’9 1/2”, more than four feet ahead of the field.
On the oval, Taylor Page was victorious at 600 meters, going 1:44.63 to beat the 1:45.31 from Herkimer seventh-grader Leah Bray. Mikayla Greene was second in the 55-meter dash in 7.74 seconds as Sophia Jarosz (7.86) was fourth.
Addison Ziegler got second place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:15.44. Meghan Moyer was fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 3:29.12 as Kaitlyn Hotaling was sixth and Kailyn Barth seventh. Moyer added a fifth in the 3,000.
Liverpool’s 4×200 relay team of Greene, Caitlyn Guilfoil, Jailyn Perrotte and Maddie Devendorf went 1:54.62 to edge Homer (1:55.34) for the top spot.
Devendorf was also third in the 300-meter dash in 45.16 seconds, edging Jarosz (45.29) in fourth. Page, Ziegler, Elise Flavin and Meera Patel were third in the 4×800 relay in 11:19.29.
Layla Pearl Collins cleared 7’6” to tie for seventh in the pole vault, with Beatrize Gurgol fifth in the 55 hurdlesin 9.88 seconds and topping 4’8” for seventh place in the high jump.
Liverpool’s boys were led by Ny’Quez Madison, who won twice, going 21’1 1/2” in the long jump and then, in the triple jump, prevailing with 42’2 1/2”, also clearing 5’4” for third place in the high jump.
Also winning was the Warriors’ 4×800 quartet of Roman Murray, Sean Zhang, Ian Sherlock and Nathan Aurello, who in 9:27.08 was nearly 10 seconds ahead of Marcellus’ second-place 9:36.77.
Michael Purvis needed 4:47.32 to hold off Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Jordan Wingert (4:47.7) and win at 1,600 meters as Brady Ruediger (4:50.83) was fifth and Josh Vang (4:51.18) sixth.
Vang added a fifth in the 3,200-meter run as Jacob Makhlouf finished sixth. J.T. Goss ran the 1,000 in 2:55.34 to take fifth place. The Warriors were sixth in the 4×400.
Anthony Cerio was sixth in the shot put (38’7”) to go with an eighth in the weight throw, while Sajan Mishra was fourth in the 55 sprint in 6.88 seconds, seventh in the long jump and eighth in the 55 hurdles.
