CENTRAL NEW YORK – With some high-profile opposition, area high school bowling teams began to rack up matches and lane experience while also trying to build win totals, too.
East Syracuse Minoa went up against its neighbors from Fayetteville-Manlius last Thursday at Green Lakes Lanes, with the boys Spartans and girls Hornets each taking 7-0 decisions.
Improving to 4-0 overall, the ESM boys withstood seeing F-M’s Adam Koss lead all individuals with his 654 series which included games of 203, 210 and 241.
Luke Liedka paced the Spartans with a 223, 215 and 197 for a 635 series as Ryan Buffum contributed a 227 game. Alex Locked closed with a 233 in his 554 set as Ryan Dablock’s 204 in a 546 series helped, too. Sean Bird gave the Hornets a 585 series with games of 211, 173 and 201.
Meanwhile, in the girls match it was F-M’s Samantha Estock leading all individuals, her 170 opening game part of a 461 series.
Help came from Teagan Hunt, who had a three-game total of 395 that beat out the best effort from the ESM girls, which was a 391 series from Alana Turbeville.
Two days earlier, ESM met Liverpool at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, with the boys Spartans shutting out the Warriors 7-0.
Buffum shot games of 191, 229 and 203, his 623 set topping all individuals as Mike Saunders’ 212 opened a 523 set. Zach Kessel shot a 494 series (177 high game) as Locke added a 482 series and Dablock got a three-game total of 466.
ESM’s girls lost to Liverpool by that same 7-0 margin, with Turbeville shooting a 451 series that included games of 171 and 164 for the Spartans. Kenzi Gill led the Warriors with a 213 high game and 545 series.
F-M managed to sweep Oswego last Monday at Lighthouse Lanes, getting a 7-0 shutout on the girls side while prevailing 5-2 over the Buccaneers in the boys match.
Even without Koss in the lineup, the boys Hornets had Bird lead the way with a consistent 581 series. Gabriel Williams’ 217 game highlighted a 565 series as Colin Gunderson’s 511 series edged out Xavier Greene’s 510 set, though Greene opened with a 237.
Estock continued to bowl well for the F-M girls, opening with a 221 as part of a 504 series. Ashlynn Yonge stepped up with a 385 set as Rica Armbrister had a 353 series.
Christian Brothers Academy swept Bishop Grimes on Thursday with a pair of 7-0 decisions, the girls again led by Eliana Occhino, who improved from 159 to 180 to 203 on her way to a 542 series.
Tom Dearnaley led the CBA boys with a 510 series that concluded with a 224 game. Zach Mulhern’s 533 series included games of 183 and 184 as Jake Mason’s 193 was part of a 521 set. Dom Beltz led Grimes with a 451 series.
