SCHENECTADY – A remarkable, historic season for the Baldwinsville girls tennis team concluded with appearances in both the team and individual portions of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournaments.
In the team portion, the Bees met Section II champion Bethlehem in the Oct. 22 regional playoffs. Though able to pick up a point, B’ville still lost, 6-1, to the Eagles.
Then it was the trio of Hannah Gould, Elaina Nesbitt and Mira Nadzan making their way to Schenectady for last week’s NYSPHSAA singles and doubles formats.
A new format was in place for 2022. Instead of immediate consolation brackets, only players who advanced to the quarterfinals would keep playing after defeats, setting up a top-eight finish in each bracket.
Thus ,it would require three wins to earn those honors, and among the Section III players, only Jamesville-DeWitt’s doubles team of Mona Farah and Tara Pollock got beyond the opening round.
Nadzan had the misfortune of drawing one of the favorites, Longwood’s Victoria Matos, in the opening round. Managing just one game in the second set, Nadzan lost, 6-0, 6-1.
It was by no means a bad defeat, since Matos ultimately reached the championship round against Bronxville’s Victoria McEnroe, who had needed to rally in three sets to beat Christian Brothers Academy star Giselle Vlassis in the same opening round where Nadzan lost – and McEnroe went on to beat Matos for the state title.
As for Gould and Nesbitt, in doubles they drew Harrison’s team of Alexia Lansberg and Hannah Rose. Some inroads were made in each set, but Gould and Nesbitt lost by identical 6-2 margins.
