ONONDAGA COUNTY – With another regular season nearing its conclusion and another Section III Class C championship within its sights, the Skaneateles girls swim team went to work and added to its win total.
The Lakers’ 96-90 victory over Christian Brothers Academy last Tuesday night at the Community Center YMCA included two wins apiece from Alice Spaulding and Arianna Matthews.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Spaulding tore to first in two minutes, 16.21 seconds, while in the 100 butterfly she went 1:00.97 for another first-place finish.
As for Matthews, she was first in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.48, pulling away in that race before going to the 500 freestyle and doing the same to win in 5:36.76.
Not only that, but Matthews, Sophia Soprano, Caitlin Comer and Kyla Palmer went 1:50.84 in the 200 freestyle relay to edge CBA’s 1:51.62 after an opening 200 medley relay where Spaulding, Comer, Elizabeth Springer and Olivia Springer went 2:02.24 to the Brothers’ 2:03.61.
Soprano, on her own, was victorious in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.04, while Elizabeth Springer twice finished second, in the 50 freestyle (26.56 seconds) and 100 backstroke (1:08.59), each time with CBA’s Ella Zaryski prevailing. Comer, in 1:16.81, was just behind Claire Krueger (1:16.39) in the 100 breaststroke.
Arianna Cirincione finished second in diving with 181.70 points after Phoebe Bedard took 13th in the Oct. 15 Salt City Diving Championships at Nottingham, earning 284.10 points, eight spots ahead of Cirincione.
In that same diving event, West Genesee star Lily Mauro finished third, her 367.35 points trailing only Cicero-North Syracuse’s Kaitlyn Carroll (457.99) and Jamesville-DeWitt’s Kayla McQuaid (402.40). The Wildcats also had Mikenna Komuda finish eigthh with 319.65 points.
The simultaneous Salt City Sprint Invitational included a 50-yard breaststroke where Matthews finished second in 33.42 seconds to J-D’s Gwen Lister (31.64), with Comer third (35.27) and Elizabeth Springer fourth (35.82).
Elsewhere, Matthews got second in the 50 butterfly in 28.12 seconds to Oswego/Mexico’s Alexa von Holtz (26.51), while Spaulding got second in the 50 backstroke in 31.31 and second in the 100 individual medley in 1:05.17.
