CENTRAL NEW YORK – When the Westhill girls volleyball team swept Marcellus on Oct. 5, it was an emphatic statement from one Section III B side to its neighbors, the reigning sectional champions.
As a follow-up, the Warriors kept on winning.
During last Tuesday’s 25-9, 25-9, 25-10 sweep of Institute of Technology Central, Sofia Domovski had six aces, with Alison Lancette getting 10 kills and three aces. Jocelyn Caputo had five kills and four aces as Emmie Sislack earned 21 assists and Hannah Schmitz got 11 assists.
Sweeping Homer 25-16, 25-15, 25-22 on Thursday was a bit tougher, but Westhill still got 25 assists from Baty and 11 digs from Tori Milliti as Janiah Robinson earned nine kills and six blocks. Lancette added eight kills and three aces, as Hannah Schmitz had five aces, nine digs and four assist.
Skaneateles had a big match last Thursday at Cazenovia, where it had to make big comebacks in each of the first two sets to go out in front and ultimately earn a 25-23, 27-25, 25-21 victory.
Ayla Pas’cal, with 10 kills, and Bella Shoenborn, with nine kills, led the front line, Kate Raddant adding six kills, eight blocks and 10 digs. Maddy Bender earned 29 assists and 11 digs, with Alice Bender earning 23 digs and three aces, Katie Combs contributing 17 digs and four kills.
Before that, the Lakers topped Solvay in four sets, claiming the first 25-15 and, after dropping the second 25-23, responding by taking the next two sets by lopsided 25-10 and 25-17 margins.
Raddant earned five aces, four kills, seven blocks and 15 digs. Pas’cal had nine kills and Combs seven kills, plus 16 digs. Maddy Bender earned 24 assists and 10 digs as Alice Bender got 22 digs.
Meanwhile, Solvay saw Ashley Filicia earn 12 assists, her passes often going to Jayde Coyne, who had eight kills, four ace and 22 digs. Naveah Baker had 18 digs and Lisa Mendez picked up 15 digs.
Right before hosting its own tournament, Marcellus routed Mexico 25-5, 25-15, 25-12 last Friday as Chloe Kutruff got 23 assists, Carly Hopper earning nine kills as Bella Palen (six kills), Sarah Louer and Bryn Goldsworthy (five kills each) all starred on the front line.
West Genesee visited Liverpool last Tuesday night and, despite getting close in the second and third sets, lost each of them by 25-23 margins after the Warriors took the first set 25-17.
Unable to avenge a four-set defeat to Liverpool in September, the Wildcats still got seven kills from Cami Zajac and six kills from Celia Spicer, with Sidney Hamilton earning 13 asssits as Olivia Snyder (11 assists) and Sonya Dunham (seven assists) again shared back-line duties.
Then WG visited unbeaten Baldwinsville on Thursday and put up quite a fight against the Bees, close in the first two sets and winning the third before falling in four sets 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 25-18.
Dunham had 13 assists and five digs, with Snyder getting 12 assists to go with her six kills and six digs. Zajac was strong, too, earning 12 kills, seven digs, three blocks and three assists as Claire Devore had seven kills and Spicer equaled Snyder’s six kills.
Bishop Ludden swept Syracuse Academy of Science 25-15, 25-11, 25-16 last Tuesday night, led by Sarah Fink’s five aces and three kills. Bridget Dunham got seven kills and Jordyn Howard added four kills.
Then Ludden lost to Living Word Academy 25-20, 25-12, 25-17 on Thursday, despite Dunham’s 10 digs and four kills and Fink adding five assists. Regina Fernandez led the Lions with 32 assists and 10 digs.
Jordan-Elbridge met Cato-Meridian last Wednesday and, after winning a long first set 26-24, dropped a close second set 25-23 before it won the third 25-17. A back-and-forth fourth set followed but the Eagles, after a series of match points, finally closed out the Blue Devils 30-28.
Sarah Lane had 20 assists, 16 digs and six kills. Taylor Eaton got 11 kills and 11 digs as Ryleigh Gill and Sydney Parsons also got six kills. Kendra Anderson got 12 digs and three aces. Brooke Chiaramonte added 11 digs and five assists.
J-E then lost 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 to Phoenix on Thursday despite 21 digs from Eaton, 15 digs from Naveaah Foster and nine assists from Lane. A 25-20, 25-8, 26-24 loss in a rematch with Cato followed on Friday.
