CENTRAL NEW YORK – In a week that would conclude with its appearance in the Manhattan Invitational, the West Genesee boys cross country team got a sweep of Wednesday’s three-team SCAC Metro division meet against Liverpool and Nottingham in Camillus.
Topping the Warriors 19-36 and the Bulldogs 20-41, the Wildcats again were led by Peter McMahon, who nearly broke the 17-minute mark on the West Genesee course but settled for a victory in 17:00.1.
Kevin Moser, in 17:12.3, beat Nottingham’s Henry Zhe-Heinemann (17:13.7) and Liverpool’s Mike Purvis (17:48.7), while Michael Gomes took fifth place in 17:52 flat. Connor Moore was seventh in 18:17.5 and Max Broccoli, in ninth place (18:18.5), rounded out WG’s scoring.
WG’s girls would also defeat Liverpool, taking a 23-38 decision led again by freshman Chloe Fietze, whose time of 20:24.6 was exactly 20 seconds ahead of the 20:44.6 from the Warriors’ Meghan Moyer.
Peyton Long made her way to fourth place in 20:55.8, leading a group of five Wildcats. Zoe Maupin was fifth in 21:47.9, with Karolina Lata gaining sixth place in 22:03.3 as Claire Griffin, in 22:12.3, was ahead of Andrea Conklin’s 22:17.3.
Going head-to-head, Westhill and Marcellus had quite a battle on the boys side, but the Warriors were able to pull out a 28-29 decision over the Mustangs.
It helped Westhill to go 1-2 with Drew O’Reilly winning in 16:23 and Teddy Popp second in 16:46 ahead of the top Marcellus duo of Nate Alexander (17:30) and Kieran Capozzi (17:33).
Bryce Burdick, fifth in 17:50, and Carlos Ramos, eighth in 18:02, were able to fend off a sixth from the Mustangs’ Zach Lester (17:59) and seventh from Liam Eldrdige (17:59) as Molan Manahan was ninth in 18:03 and Kolton Finarty 10th in 18:15.
Westhill swept Marcellus 15-50 in the girls meet, even though the Mustangs’ Sophia Maum won the individual title in a time of 20:19 to edge the Warriors’ Stella Napolitano (20:22) for that top spot.
Ellie Thornton was third, in 20:39, with Eileen Mullen fourth in 21:30. Alexis Bergett (21:35) and Ashley Carter (22:01) rounded out the scoring column for Westhill.
Marcellus had run at McQuaid, too, with Eldridge (17:52.6) just ahead of Alexander (17:56.4) as Skaneateles saw Aidan Ward finish 35th in 17:22.7 and Jordan-Elbridge had Peyton Bates take 45th place in 17:33.7.
Solvay ran Wednesday against Cazenovia, taking a 15-40 defeat on the boys side as five different Lakers were ahead of the 19:53 from the Bearcats’Aaron Trendell. Max Overend finished in 20:18, with Jack Burke posting 20:50 as Landon Raymond, in exactly 21 minutes, beat out the 21:13 from Jamison Sass.
