CENTRAL NEW YORK – Having raced to a 3-0 start in August, the Skaneateles boys golf team looked to keep up that momentum in September as school got underway.
The Lakers’ fourth straight win was lopsided as it topped Phoenix 206-281 last Tuesday afternoon at Skaneateles Country Club, with Tyson DiRubbo’s 35 the low nine-hole total.
Jack Marquardt played well, too, shooting a 37, while Drew Mancini put up a 40. Skaneateles swept the top five as Tye Kennedy had a 46 and Max McConochy had a 51 ahead of the Firebirds’ Blake Hoyt, who shot 53.
Two days later, Skaneateles made it five in a row against Homer, battling to a 209-219 victory over the Trojans at Cortland Country Club.
Overcoming a 34 by Homer’s Mitch Riter, the Lakers got a 39 from DiRubbo and 40s from Marquardt and Mancini to match the Trojans’ Lukas Quinn, plus a 44 from Ben Underhill and a 45 from Henry Major.
And this led to a showdown Friday with undefeated Christian Brothers Academy at Drumlins, where DiRubbo achieved a rare double eagle on the 8th hole when he holed a 170-yard shot from the fairway on the par-5.
DiRubbo finished with a 40, as did Marquardt, while Will Murphy had a 41, but the Brothers posted the best four rounds, led by Jack Gregory’s 36, and prevailed overall 191-206.
Westhill got to 2-1 on Sept. 1 by routing Mexico 195-247 at Emerald Crest. Danny Young shot 35, with Devin Young and Aiden Ryan both posting 36 and Grady Pens adding a 40. Evan Chaddock finished with a 47.
A win over Hannibal followed last Wednesday, this one with Danny Young shooting 36 at Camillus Golf Club. Ryan had a 37, with Devin Young getting a 39 as Todd Owens and Michael Glover both posted 50.
During Thursday’s 213-257 win over LaFayette at Orchard Valley, again it was Danny Young with the low round, his 39 just ahead of Grady Pens’ 40. Ryan got a 41, Devin Young a 43 and Christian Loomis shot 50.
West Genesee saw its Gold team defeat Fayetteville-Manlius White 210-225 on Sept. 1. Ryan Till shot an impressive 37 in windy conditions as Tyler Anastasio was second with a 42. Owen Zoanetti picked up a 43, while Ben Glass and Anthony Pirro had matching totals of 44.
Even better for WG Gold was its 191-199 victory over Liverpool on Friday afternoon, where Till and Zoanetti both shot 36 to lead the Wildcats. Glass and Jason Clifton shot 39, equaling the Warriors’ low rounds by Dom Osbeck and Bradley Cole.
As for West Genesee Blue, it played quite well in its Sept. 2 match against Liverpool at Westvale, nearly upsetting the Warriors before the visitors prevailed 190-193.
Will Shields shot 37 to tie LCole for top individual finish. Jared Jaeger had a 38, but three Warriors matched that mark ahead of 39s by Max Walker and Kolton Castrello. Frankie Barbuto and Lincoln Christopher both shot 40 and Jake Elinich had a 41. WG Blue’ lost 203-217 to Cicero-North Syracuse Blue last Wednesday afternoon.
