CENTRAL NEW YORK – When it counted the most, the Christian Brothers Academy girls golf team rose to the top.
Following up its Onondaga High School League championship on May 18, the Brothers went to Kanon Valley Tuesday and claimed small-school honors in the Section III tournament.
When all the scores were counted, CBA, at 405, was just ahead of New Hartford’s second-place 415 as Westhill was third with a 433.
Hana Kang led CBA, shooting 96 to finish in a tie for eighth place among individuals and also advance to this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament at McGregor Links in Wilton.
Grace Catalano had a 97, which tied her with Manlius Pebble Hill golfer Amitees Fazeli one shot outside the state tournament cut line. Aubrey Mills and Anna Fuller both shot 106 for the Brothers
Fayetteville-Manlius Green was favored to take the large-school crown at the sectional tournament, but found itself a close second to Cicero-North Syracuse Blue, the two sides separated by just six strokes, the Northstars finishing with 399 and the Hornets at 405.
F-M Green was consistent, with Gabby Dardis, Bella Fullmer and Heirot Miller each shooting 101 and Alana Isley finishing right behind them at 102.
They all beat the 104 from C-NS Blue’s Chloe Tice and 107 from Andrea Wheaton, but the 89 shot by Jessica Ricciardi that tied her for fourth place, along with a 99 from Isabella Borte, put the Northstars in front.
Jamesville-DeWitt finished fifth among large schools with a 430. Abby Neuman shot a 100 to tie for 18th place, while Jaeda Robinson and Sophia Ferris both finished at 108 and Cleo Shiomos had a 129.
East Syracuse Minoa Blue had a team total of 461. Jessica Griffith and Isabelle Chavoustie both finished at 110 ahead of Jenna Orlando (120), Shayla Samson (121) and Leah Chavoustie, who posted 129. MPH’s Parmees Fazeli had a 112, ESM Orange’s Khloe Welch shot 122 and Bishop Grimes’ Ashley Ince had a 140.
A day earlier, in the boys sectional West division tournament, Manlius Pebble Hill finished second in the large-school division behind Marcellus and Bishop Grimes did the same in the small-school division behind Bishop Ludden.
Individually, the Cobras’ Vince Falgiatano shot a 78, behind only the Marcellus duo of John White (72) and Will Glass (77), while MPH’s Tommy Wildhack tied for fourth with an 84 and James Wildhack shared seventh place with an 89, all of them advancing to the sectional state qualifier later in the week.
When they went to the sectional state qualifier at Skenandoa Golf Club in Clinton, local teams flourished as five of them had golfers advance to the final round.
J-D’s Mitchell Archer led the way, posting a 77 that put him in a tie for fourth place, three strokes behind the leader, Westhill’s Anthony Maglisco, while Archer’s teammate, Jackson Saroney, shot 79 and Punn Chitaratlert had an 80.
Putting up a 78, F-M’s Velton Perry advanced, too, as did Falgiatano with an 81 and CBA’s Joe Nicholson with an 80. ESM’s Zach Johnson and CBA’s Jack Gregory shot 81 to make the cut on the number.
