ONONDAGA COUNTY – Once again, anyone trying to dislodge the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team from its place atop the Class D pecking order will need to do something special.
The Lakers’ form was evident in last Friday’s clash with Westhill at Hyatt Stadium, where it was nearly perfect in the first half and went from there to defeating the Warriors 16-5.
Westhill’s 11-3 record hardly mattered in those first 25 minutes. Kathryn Morrissey kept winning draws and those possessions turned into a run of 11 unanswered Skaneateles goals.
Julia O’Connor finished with four goals and three assists. Ava Logan also had three assists as Anasofia Cirincione had her first three-goal hat trick, with Rachel Hackler and Ella Bobbett each converting twice.
Morrissey tacked on a goal and two assists as Lilly Marquardt, Paige Willard, Tatum Ryan and Kelsey Rutledge had single goals. On Westhill’s side, Kara Rosenberger did score twice in the second half, with Grace Winkler, Bella Sampo and Karly Dillobaugh getting one goal apiece.
A day earlier, Skaneateles started the homestretch with a clinical 17-2 win over LaFayette where it roared out to an 11-1 advantage by halftime, paced by Marquardt dishing out seven assists.
O’Connor, scoring four times, led an attack where Bella Brogan had three goals and three assists and Logan had three goals and two assists. Cirincione had two goals and one assist as Marquardt, Bobbett, Willard, Emily Huttar and Claire Neumann had one goal apiece.
Skaneateles started the last full week of the regular season with last Monday’s 17-1 romp over Jordan-Elbridge, where only a goal by the Eagles’ Gabrielle Gunnip prevented a shutout.
O’Connor and Anna McGlynn both scored three times, part of another well-balanced Lakers offense. Brogan and Cirincione each had two goals and one assist, with Ryan and Katie Reed and Tatum Ryan also scoring twice. Marquardt had a goal and two assists.
A stark contrast to this was Westhill’s battle last Tuesday against reigning sectional Class A champion Cicero-North Syracuse, who held on to defeat the Warriors 11-10.
Try as it could, Westhill could not quite catch C-NS despite Rosenberger’s four goals and two goals apiece from Winkler and Rosemary Mahoney. Dillobaugh and Gianna Zerrillo had the other goals. Tori Iannotti led C-NS with four goals, while Brooke Molchanoff and Mackenzie Prentice each had two goals and one assist.
Marcellus had lost to Skaneateles and Westhill, but had beat everyone else in the OHSL, with none of those games as exciting as last Thursday’s 11-10 win over Christian Brothers Academy.
These teams went back and forth all night, with the Mustangs edging in front 6-5 by halftime and then exactly matching what the Brothers produced the rest of the way.
Cece Powell led with three goals, while Lucy Powell, Annalise Bird and Kadie Tierney each scored twice. Single goals went to Claire Card and Quinn Burnett as Anna Spitzer got a pair of assists. Gracie Britton led CBA with five goals and one assist.
In last Tuesday’s 20-5 win over Chittenango, the Mustangs, despite the Bears’ 8-5 record, scored at will all game long, with Cece Powell leading the way as she finished with five goals and two assists.
Burnett, Card, and Quinn Burnett each scored three times, Card also got two assists asSpitzer had two goals and two assists. Bird and Lauren Weidner added single goals.
When Westhill took its turn against Chittenango Thursday, it led the Bears 13-2 by halftime and breezed from there to a 17-5 victory, led by Adelaide Lowery, who had three goals and three assists.
Winkler, Zerrillo and Dillobaugh each scored twice, with Sampo getting a goal and two assists. Mahoney, Julia Sparks, Grace Bergett and Olivia Gonnella also picked up goals.
