CENTRAL NEW YORK – Two area high school girls lacrosse powers would go at it on Saturday when Skaneateles met West Genesee at Mike Messere Field.
And while the Wildcats got off to an ideal start, the Lakers quickly took control and ultimately prevailed by a score of 12-9 for its seventh consecutive victory.
After giving up the opening goal, WG went in front 3-1 as Cara Major scored twice and Courtney Reynolds added a goal, but by the middle of the half Skaneateles was back even, 3-3.
Three goals in a three-minute span gave the Lakers a 6-3 edge, but the Wildcats didn’t go away, starting to convert on a regular basis and moving within one, 9-8, early in the second half.
A Lakers goal made it 10-8, and then it held the ball for more than five minutes before another key goal extended the margin to three, ultimately too much for WG to overcome.
Bella Brogan, with four goals and one assist, and Julia O’Connor, scoring three times, led the Lakers’ attack. Kathryn Morrissey had two goals and three assists as Lilly Marquardt amassed five assists to go with her lone tally. Ava Logan and Ella Bobbett had the other goals, the Lakers overcoming 11 saves by Wildcats goalie Allie Hanlon.
So ended a busy week which included a game last Tuesday where Skaneateles pulled off a shutout, keeping Tully/Fabius-Pompey off the board in a 17-0 victory.
O’Connor had four goals, with Logan and Brogan both scoring twice and Logan earning three assists. Marquardt had a goal and four assists as Morrissey and Anasofia Cirincione both got a goal and two assists, Tatum Ryan adding one goal and one assist.
Then, in the Lakers’ 20-3 win over Mexico on Thursday night, O’Connor scored four times, with Logan getting two goals and five assists. Marquardt, Brogan, Rachel Hackler and Kelsey Rutledge also had two-goal outings, with Marquardt getting three assists.
Westhill faces Skaneateles late this week and got a big win last Monday when it battled past Homer 13-9.
Gaining a 9-5 advantage by halftime, the Warriors made sure the Trojans didn’t catch up, with Grace Winkler at the forefront as she got four goals and two assists.
Rosemary Mahoney scored three times, adding an assist. Kara Rosenberger got two goals as Bella Sampo had three assists. Single goals went to Adelaide Lowery and Emma DeSanto.
Then, not having any kind of letdown, Westhill turned around and, less than 24 hours later, was quite impressive agianst Marcellus, breezing to a 14-7 victory over the Mustangs.
Jumping out to a 10-4 edge by halftime, the Warriors saw Mahoney back up her four goals with three assists as Winkler also scored four times. Lowery tacked on three goals as Gianna Zerillo scored twice and got a pair of assists. Rosenberger had the other goal.
Other than Claire Card, who netted four goals, no Marcellus player found the net more than once, single goals going to Anna Spitzer, Annalise Bird and Lucy Powell as Cece Powell added an assist.
Marcellus handled Whitesboro 20-4 on Thursday as Kadie Tierney had five goals and one assist. Spitzer got three goals and four assists, with Cece Powell adding three goals and three assists as Korinne Kemp scored twice.
A 20-3 win over East Syracuse Minoa followed on Saturday, the Mustangs seeing Cece Powell set a new career mark with eight goals. Spitzer, Tierney and Lucy Powell had three goals apiece, with Spitzer adding three assists.
Jordan-Elbridge, who started the week 1-7, got its second win of the season last Monday when it edged Clinton 14-13, led by Gabby Gunnip, who had six goals and two assists.
Riley Crawford had four goals and one assist, while Gabby Smart got two goals and two assists. Single goals went to Makayla Penird and Lily Humphries as Madyn LaFleur and Briana Vaccaro gained assists.
A 13-7 loss to LaFayette followed as Penird and Smart both scored twice, with single goals going to Gunnip, Humphries and Crawford, but the Eagles did beat Tully/Fabius-Pompey 12-6 on Thursday night.
Gunnip, with six goals and one assist, matched the Black Knights all by herself, with Smart getting four goals and one assist. Penird and Kyra Dominick had the other goals as Crawford and Brooke Tanner earned assists.
