ONONDAGA COUNTY – Trying again to state its case as a challenger to Fayetteville-Manlius in the SCAC Metro division, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team went head-to-head with the Hornets last Tuesday afternoon.
And there was some success from Antonio Marsallo, who in first singles put the Bees on the board with an impressive 6-2, 6-2 victory over Cameron Lukasik.
However, F-M claimed every other point and prevailed, 6-1, with Logan Bolton and Ashton Baylor unable to land games in their singles matches against David Fernando and Colin Byer.
One close match took place in doubles, where Mason Doan and Connor Tutor pushed Andrew Li and Fergus Brady to a third set, but lost 6-4, 5-7, 6-1.
Otherwise, Nick Licciardello and Andrew Jung lost, 6-1, 6-1, to Davin Woolridge and Jaden Duggal, while Zach Treichler and Aidan Delaney fell to Gene Balian and Dan Manta 6-0, 6-1. Kai Wilson and Zach Pendergast had a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to Xavier Sul and Anay Datal.
Right before this, B’ville won its league opener, topping Cicero-North Syracuse 5-2. What keyed the Bees’ victory was sweeping all three singles matches, a sweep maintained when, in three sets, Doan outlasted Matthew Jordan 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Marsallo shut out Wyatt Dupell 6-0, 6-0 in first singles, while Tutor wasted little time putting together a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Brandon Nguyen.
Moving to doubles, Licciardello and Jung roared past Dan Jordan and Brady Petranchuk 6-1, 6-1, as Delaney and Bolton took a 7-5, 6-0 loss to Tim Mai and Joe DeGroat.
In three sets, Cameron Dougherty and Aidan Stan took a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Ryan Fehrman and Andrew George, but Pendergast and Treichler were able to work through three sets to beat Pete Gill and Ryan Keil 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
