CENTRAL NEW YORK – A quiet early schedule for the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team gave away to bigger challenges that included last Thursday night’s showdown with Section V powerhouse Victor.
Having gone through many showdowns with the Blue Devils through the years, the Red Rams were quite aware of what it was about to face – yet still would struggle throughout a 16-6 loss.
Victor’s potent attack settled matters early, constantly breaking through J-D’s defenses and not letting up until it had accumulated an 11-3 halftime advantage.
It was 15-4 through three quarters before the Blue Devils’ starters rested. Only Gannon Kessler and Ryan Brazell, with three goals apiece, scored for the Rams, Matt Keeler adding an assist as Ian McIntyre produced 16 saves.
J-D was scheduled to play twice in the lead-up to the Victor game, bashing Fulton 18-2 last Monday as it sprinted out to a 13-2 halftime advantage, Sam Brazell and Eli Goldberg each getting four goals and combining for six assists.
Kessler had three goals and three assists, while Mario Streiff found the net twice. Single goals went to Keeler, Noah Marshall, Zach Tiffany, Aidan Bates and Lucas Patchen. Another game, with Cortland, was postponed.
As J-D struggled against Victor, Christian Brothers Academy maintained its undefeated mark when it went to Tully/Fabius-Pompey and struggled for a while before pulling away late to beat the Black Knights 15-10.
The Brothers had an 8-4 halftime edge, only to see Tully/F-P move within two, 10-8, thanks to a strong third quarter where Lane Berry and Tom Edinger, who finished with four goals apiece, added to their totals.
But CBA got away late as Joe Papa, Seamus Nicholson and Declan Landers each netted three goals and Papa got three assists. Dan Anderson also had three assists, matching Andrew Kohlbrenner and Dan Ludington as they all scored twice and Kohlbrenner tacked on two assists.
In Sunday’s 19-10 win over Canisius (Buffalo), CBA bolted to a 7-1 advantage by the end of the first quarter and never got caught, with Landers picking up a team-best six goals.
Kohlbrenner scored four times, adding four assists, while Papa had three goals and three assists. Dan Anderson got two goals and three assists as Nicholson, Ludington, Ben Anderson and John Massaro had one goal apiece.
Fayetteville-Manlius had a far worse time of it on Thursday night, tackling reigning sectional Class A champion Baldwinsville and getting overwhelmed in a 16-8 loss to the Bees.
B’ville wasted little time establishing control, sprinting out to a 5-1 lead by the end of the first quarter and then spending the rest of the game steadily adding to that margin. Carson Dyl and Ryan Hollenbeck led the Bees with three goals apiece as Keegan Lynch scored twice and got five assists.
East Syracuse Minoa was 2-3 and had not played in a week when it took on Fulton last Saturday afternoon. The Spartans let out a lot of frustrations on the Red Raiders, rolling to a 17-2 victory.
Jackson Palumb, with four goals and two assists, led the charge, with Logan Welch scoring three times and adding an assist. Trey Jones had two goals and three assists, with Dillon Abreu getting two goals and one assist. Evan deBerjeois had a goal and three asssits as Zach Shufelt, John Courcy and Dominic Caruana also found the net.
