CENTRAL NEW YORK – With just one game in the books, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls lacrosse team was quite eager to see activity pick up during the April school break.
The Red Rams went to Fulton last Monday and, unlike some of its battles in recent years, this one was never in questions as J-D jumped all over the Red Raiders in an 18-6 victory.
During a decisive first half, J-D tore through Fulton’s defenses and built a 13-2 advantage, with Lindsay Hildreth and Macy Durkin leading the way as they both would finish with four goals, Durkin adding two assists.
Caroline Stone had two goals and two assists, while Sydney Balotin had a goal and three assists. Brooke Bort, Campbell Endres and Merris Kessler had the other goals as Kate Wilcox got three assists.
Then J-D went up against reigning sectional Class B champion Auburn on Wednesday and suffered its first blemish, taking a 10-8 loss to the Maroons.
Auburn inched in front 5-3 by halftime and equaled the Rams the rest of the way. Durkin, Hildreth and Kate Barclay had two goals apiece, with Balotin getting a goal and two assists as Kessler also converted. Danielle Swietoniowski and Caroline Smith led the Maroons with three goals apiece.
J-D took its first setback on Saturday with a 10-6 defeat to West Genesee. Only Balotin scored twice as Kessler amassed four assists and single goals went to Hildreth, Durkin, Campbell Endries and Caroline Stone.
Fayetteville-Manlius rebounded from its first defeat of the season to Pittsford on April 9, rallying in the second half to edge Liverpool 15-14 in last Tuesday’s SCAC Metro division opener.
Led by Maggie Tifft’s three goals, the Warriors built a 9-5 halftime advantage and still was up 13-10 before the Hornets stormed back late in the second half, closing on a 5-1 run and only taking the lead for good just before regulation ended.
Ava Angello, with seven goals, and Melanie Steigerwald, with two goals and seven assists, led the charge. Emily Noel had three goals and one assist as Julianna Cogliandro also got two goals and Anne Leonard one goal. Tifft finished with five goals and Mia Berthoff four goals to pace the Warriors.
The excitement continued Thursday as F-M and reigning sectional Class A champion Cicero-North Syracuse battled in a game decided in the final seconds, when the Hornets held off the Northstars 11-10.
All game long, the two sides stayed close. Angello controlled 12 draws and netted five goals, with Cogliandro adding three goals as Steigerwald got a goal and four assists. Leonard and Grace Reyna had the other goals.
F-M’s defense held C-NS’s top scorer, Fran Tortora, to two goals and two assists. Tori Iannotti scored three times, but Hornets goalie Hannah Williamson had 10 saves, none bigger than the point-blank stop she made on a free-position shot in the final second of regulation.
East Syracuse Minoa fell 20-3 to Central Square last Monday. Rylyn Commisso earned two goals and Anna Paduano a single goal, but the rest of the Spartans were shut out as Hannah Reichard’s five goals and two assists set the pace for the Redhawks.
In Thursday’s 21-6 defeat to Fulton, Mary Grace Godleski put up three goals and one assist. Paduano added a goal and two assists as Commisso and Sophia Ferris also scored.
