SYRACUSE – With a Section III Class AA championship secure, the Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy wrestling team put together a third-place finish at last Saturday’s sectional Division I meet at SRC Arena.
Among the large schools, the Rams’ total of 129 points put it behind a tight duel at the top between Class A rivals Fulton and Indian River, with the Red Raiders (163 points) edging the Warriors (160.5) for the victory.
Only one J-D/CBA wrestler reached the finals – William BeSeth, who at 132 pounds beat Liverpool’s Tyler Vivacqua 9-2 in the semifinals, only to get pinned in the title bout by IR’s Alex Booth.
But the Rams had three wrestlers win their respective consolation brackets, including Matt Dougherty, who at 102 pounds pinned West Genesee’s Austin Fesinger in 31 seconds for third place.
Matching that finish at 110 pounds, Jordyn Hill rolled past Carthage’s Landon Copley 10-2 in his consolation bracket final, while Gerald Vielhauer secured third place at 152 pounds, shutting out Baldwinsvlle’s Max Naples 4-0.
Mason Porter earned fourth place at 138 pounds, while Leonardo Tallarico (172 pounds) and Ben Paul (215 pounds) each finished fifth and sixth-place finishes went to Garrett Williams at 145 pounds and Cameron Beecher at 285 pounds.
In order to finish fifth, Paul had to beat Fayetteville-Manlius wrestler Jackson Schwab with an overtime takedown in a 3-1 classic, one of three sixth-place finishes for the Hornets. Sam Reikes was sixth at 102 behind Dougherty, with Trent Gloo doing the same at 126 pounds.
As for East Syracuse Minoa, Max Wunderlich got a fourth-place finish at 285, with Colin Zwiesler earning sixth place at 189 pounds.
