SYRACUSE – All season long, the Cazenovia boys indoor track and field team had more than held its own when facing larger rosters from bigger schools in various invitational meets.
So when the Lakers finally got to meet its peers in Saturday’s Section III Class B-2 championships at SRC Arena, no one would get close to them.
Amid a nine-team field, Cazenovia accumulated 167 points, getting on the board in every event except the pole vault, pulling far away from runner-up Clinton (68 points) and securing the sectional championship in part due to a relay sweep.
In the first relay, the 4×400, the Lakers’ quartet of Wyatt Scott, Jaden Kaplan, Carter Ruddy and Dan Millson roared to a winning time of 3:55.78, the only time under the four-minute mark.
Kaplan returned in the 4×800 relay, joining Michael Senehi, Ben McPherson and Will Austin to win in 9:28.62, and to cap it off in the 4×200, Cassidy Gilmore, Andrew Lee, J.P. Hoak and Andrew Kent won in 1:41.40, beating the field by more than five seconds.
On his own, Senehi prevailed twice, running the 1,000-meter run in 2:51.59 to the 2:52.54 from Phoenix’s Brendon Champion, with McPherson fourth in 2:58.25.
Then, in the 1,600-meter run, Senehi prevailed again, his 4:53.21 again just ahead of Champion (4:55.76), while Eddie Comeau laneded in fifth place (5:17.39), ahead of Austin (5:21.84) in sixth place.
Gilmore took his turn at 600 meters, winning in 1:26.91 to hold off Jack Phillips (Skaneateles), who was second in 1:28.59. In the 300-meter dash, Gilmore was third in 38.86 seconds, with Millson (39.01) fourth and Kent fifth in 39.35.
More wins came form field events as Jed Olkowski threw the shot put 39 feet 10 ¾ inches, with Kent (33’3 1/4”) getting fifth place and Andrew Falso seventh in this event, but improving to fourth in the weight throw with 31’8 3/4”.
Connor Frisbie was victorious in the triple jump, his best attempt of 38’2” part of a 1-2-3 Cazenovia effort as Millson, going 37’2 1/2”, was second and Scott was third with 35’5” as Kaplan (31′ 1/2”) finished sixth.
Hoak went 7.03 seconds for second place in the 55-meter dash, with Charlie Aronson fourth in 7.13 and Lee seventh. Dylan Shephard was second in the 55 hurdles in 9.45 seconds.
Carter Ruddy cleared 5’6” for third place in the high jump, with Frisbie (5’4”) in fourth place. Aronson earned third place in the long jump with 17’7 3/4”, matching Frisbie’s best as Scott finished sixth. Austin got fourth place in the 3,200-meter run in 11:36 flat as Brandon McColm (11:46.83) was fifth.
Up in Class B-1, Chittenango earned 32 points in the boys meet for seventh place and 25 points in the girls meet for eighth place as Westhill was victorious on both sides.
Caleb LeBlanc won twice, his time of 9:55.35 in the 3,200 beating out the 9:58.23 from Westhill’s Drew O’Reilly and then going on to take the 1,600 in 4:40.64 to edge O’Reilly’s teammate, Brian Kenny (4:41.91).
In the 4×800, LeBlanc, Alex Brummer, Manu Tipa and Shamus Effe were second in 9:14.48. Joseph Lin got fifth place in the 55 hurdles in 9.40 seconds. The Bears were also fifth in the 4×400.
Chittenango’s girls were second in the 4×400 as Madison Wagner, Hannah Wagner, Jordan Wagner and Abigail Horning posted 4:29.49 to South Jefferson’s winning 4:24.42.
Laura Powers, in 5:31.45, earned second place in the 1,500-meter run, with Bailee Burton third in 5:32.21. Allie Bartoszek was sixth in the 55 hurdles, while Katie Jasmin was seventh. The Bears took fifth in the 4×800.
