NEDROW – Just in time, the Marcellus wrestling team reclaimed its full roster – and promptly brought home a championship.
The Mustangs, with 234 points, edged out Phoenix (229) to win Saturday’s Onondaga High School League tournament held at Onondaga High School, with Jordan-Elbridge earning 159.5 points for third place.
Of the five Marcellus wrestlers that finished on top, none was more welcome than Carl Santariello’s victory at 118 pounds.
Santiarello had not wrestled for more than a month from early December until a Jan. 22 win over Mexico’s Ryan Gates, but he quickly showed the form that made him a sixth-place finisher at 106 pounds in the last state tournament held in 2020.
After three straight technical falls in the early rounds, Santariello met Phoenix’s Caleb Jolly in the finals. It proved an active and exciting bout, but Santariello won it 14-9.
This came right after Donavan Fraher won at 110 pounds with a 55-second pin over another Phoenix wrestler, Cole Bailer, and before a 126-pound final where Colin Scherer fought past J-E’s Nolan Jackson in a 5-2 decision.
Marcellus didn’t stop there, though, as Chris Doshna won a tense 145-pound final 11-8 over Cazenovia’s Broden Enders as, at 215 pounds, Jonas Kaczor claimed that title by beating Phoenix’s William Burnell 10-4.
And three other Mustangs got to the finals, including Dan Okhman, who nearly won at 152 pounds as he lost a 10-9 final to Phoenix’s Ethan Bruno, while Jayden Logudice (160 pounds) was pinned by Phoenix’s Jacob Neupert and Zach Grolling (189 pounds) fell 11-2 to Chittenango’s Andrew Bailey.
Adam Barbosa finished third at 152, a finish matched by Ryder Donahue at 172 pounds. Gavin Ciota was fifth at 126 pounds and Doryn LeClaire (132 pounds) gained sixth place.
For Jordan-Elbridge, Jack Lamson was victorious at 132, edging Phoenix’s Parker Allers 7-5, while Jack Smith won at 138 pounds when he pinned Phoenix’s Trenton Hoyt in the third period.
Aside from Jackson, Angelo Turo was a finalist for the Eagles at 172 pounds, where he lost 14-3 to APW/Pulaski’s Conner Shaw in the championship bout.
Kaylee Swalgin’s 81-second pin of Luke Rodriguez (Cazenovia) led to a third-place finish at 118 as Bryce Rigby secured third place at 189 by edging Macsen Cameron (Chittenango) 5-3. Henry Smith was fourth at 126 as Raiden Yale (215 pounds) finished fifth and Tyler Chilson (102 pounds) took sixth place
