SYRACUSE – Right up to the last event, the outcome of Thursday night’s Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division boys indoor track and field meet at SRC Arena was in some doubt.
But when all the scores were added up, Baldwinsville had secured the league championship, earning 141 points to fend off second-place Fayetteville-Manlius, who was second with 136 points. Liverpool, with 72.5 points, was a distant third.
Sweeping both sprints, Sam Mellinger took the 55-meter dash in 6.54 seconds to top West Genesee’s Dom Burris (6.67) before going to the 300-meter dash and, in 36.57 seconds, going 1-2 with Logan Hayes, who posted a time of 37.58.
Owen Weaver excelled, too, going 42 feet 6 1/2 inches to win the triple jump as Noah Covert (37’3 1/2″) was sixth, while in the long jump Weaver was second with 20’4″ and Robert Thompson took third place with 20’3 3/4″.
In the 4×400 relay, the Bees had Weaver, Hayes, Jack McAllister and Kyle Sheckler go 3:33.56 to beat out West Genesee’s 3:36.11. And McAllister would win again in the 600-meter run, going 1:30.30 to beat the field by nearly a full second as Kellan Vannatta (1:32.43) was sixth.
Solomon Holden-Betts, in 4:36.58, was second to F-M’s Will Seamans (4:33.79) and ran to third in the 1,000-meter run in 2:42.32 as Jeff Ragonese (2:48.50) was seventh. Arthur Bauer got fourth place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:49.06.
Mellenger, Hayes, Thompson and Ryan Pelletier were second (1:35.80) to West Genesee (1:34.25) in the 4×200 relay as Holden-Betts, Vannatta, McAllister and Ragonese were third in the 4×800 relay in 8:40.21. In the 55-meter hurdles, Jackson Creelman was third in 8.87 seconds and Logan Zapf finished fourth in 8.94.
Pat Pasho threw the shot put 42’4 1/2″ to get third place as Dan Ewald was fifth with 37’7 3/4″ and also was fifth in the weight throw with 43’9 1/4″, two spots ahead of Adam Cuyler’s 36’8 3/4″.
In the pole vault, Sheckler topped 9 feet for second place and Dylan Wertheim topped 8’6″ for fourth place. Sheckler cleared 5’2″ in the high jump to take fifth place.
B’ville’s girls indoor track team finished fifth in the SCAC Metro meet with 38 points. It included a 4×400 relay where Avamarie Davis, Kelsey Dwyer, Clare Horan and Madison Kennedy were second in 4:19.23, just behind Cicero-North Syracuse’s 4:18.62.
Mia Pozzi was third in the 55 sprint in 7.82 seconds and then took fourth in the 300 in 44.67 seconds as Davis finished eighth. Dwyer, clearing 7’6″, finished third in the pole vault.
Kennedy was fifth in the 600 in 1:44.19, with Kamryn Barton (1:46.22) seventh. Sophia Cavalieri got fifth in the 1,000 in 3:22.93, with Brianna Grosso seventh in 3:29.48 as Cavalieri, Barton, Adrianna Orlando and Mary Sabatino were fourth in the 4×800 in 10:44.71.
In the 4×200, Davis, Pozzi, Kennedy and Dwyer were fourth in 1:53.48. Isabella Mitts had a sixth-place weight throw of 24’8 1/2″ as Morgan Hagopian tied for seventh in the shot put (22’10 3/4″).
Elsewhere, Anaiya Johnson took eighth in the triple jump, while Erin Seitzer was eighth in the 3,000-meter run, with Horan eighth in the 1,500-meter run.
