SYRACUSE – It proved to be a big Wednesday night for two area indoor track and field programs during the Onondaga High School League championships at SRC Arena.
Marcellus, on the boys side, and Westhill, on the girls side, both were victorious in the OHSL Division I meet, in each instance fending off challenges from Cazenovia, who finished second.
It was particularly a two-team race on the girls end, Westhill needing 149 points as Cazenovia got 131 points for the second spot. Marcellus took fourth place and Skaneateles finished fifth.
Ashley Bolesh went 3:15.80 to pull away from the field and win the 1,000-meter run, and then went to the 600-meter run and prevailed in 1:42.57, with teammate Kennedy Rose second in 1:49.40.
As the only athlete at the meet to claim three events, Bolesh earned her third title in the triple jump, where a best attempt of 35 feet 3 3/4 inches beat out Kate Bendall’s second-place 33’6 3/4″.
Bendall, meanwhile, was victorious in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.41 seconds as Elle Herrera finished fifth, and then, in the long jump, Bendall beat the field by going 16’3 1/2″, with Charlotte Formica in fifth place.
Angie Mesa-Espinosa went 7.49 seconds and edged Herrera (7.55) as Westhill went 1-2 in the 55-meter dash. Mesa-Espinosa, Rose, Emma DeSanto and Molly Thompson claimed the 4×200 relay in 1:55.20 as Rose, DeSanto, Karly Dillabough and Olivia Holowinski get second place in the 4×400 relay in 4:35.78.
Mary Kate Rewakowski was second in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet as Corrine Allen (7 feet) was third. Ellie Thornton was fourth in the 3,000-meter run, with Collen Patrie fifth in the shot put.
A victory for Skaneateles was again earned by Kyla Palmer, who blasted to a time of 41.71 seconds in the 300-meter dash to beat out Mesa-Espinosa’s quick 42.36 as Herrera was third in 44.77.
Palmer also helped Rory Comer, Grace Conan and Annabel Wells finish second to Westhill in the 4×200 in 1:57.01. The Lakers were fourth in the 4×400 in 4:47.34, beating out Marcellus (4:49.58) in fifth as Cate Comer was fifth in the 600 and Rory Comer was fourth in the long jump, going 14’3 1/2″.
Marcellus had Heidi Steigerwald win the girls high jump by clearing 4’10” as Westhill’s Abby Cottrell was fifth. Steigerwald, Virginia Lucchetti, Sophia Maum and Brielle McShane were second in the 4×800 relay in 11:21.82, beating out Westhill (11:23.89) for the runner-up spot.
The Mustangs also saw Olivia Smolen get second place in the weight throw with 27’3″. Solvay had Jessica Mann finish fourth in the shot put with a throw of 27’4 1/2″, while
Meanwhile, in the OHSL boys meet, Marcellus, led by Tyler Herr and Peter McCaffrey, earned 116 points, with Cazenovia (89) beating out Westhill (82) for the second spot.
Herr roared to victory in the 55 sprint in 6.80 seconds to beat Syracuse ITC’s Greg O’Selmo (6.94) as teammate Ethan Snyder was sixth. Then, in the 300, it was Herr crossing the line in 38.37 seconds to beat out CBA’s Chris Zajdel (38.59) as Skaneateles got Jack Phillips fourth in 38.78 and Ryan Constable was sixth.
McCaffrey unleashed a top long jump of 19’4 3/4″, with Joe Striffler (18’4 1/2″) in fourth place. Then the pair went 1-2 in the triple jump, McCaffrey winning with 40’7 3/4″ and Striffler second with 39’10 1/2″.
Herr, Striffler, Colin Gerbsch and Ethan Snyder were second in the 4×200 in 1:40.22, edging Westhill (1:40.60) in third place as McCaffrey topped 5’8″ for third place in the high jump for six more points.
Gerbsch, Constable, Xander Szalach and Mason Grieb went 3:48.99 in the 4×400, a close second to Cazenovia’s 3:48.79, with Mason Grieb second in the 55 hurdles in 8.68 seconds as Lukas Grieb was seventh.
Nate Alexander took third place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:38.85, with Nolan Manahan fifth and Matt Vitale sixth in the 1,000, Alexander fifth in the 1,600-meter run and Gerbsch fifth in the 600.
George Hanford had a third-place shot put toss of 37 feet as Scott Hall finished seventh to go with a sixth in the weight throw.
Westhill, meanwhile, had a win in the 4×800 as Brian Allen, Brian Kenny, Bohdan Centore and Drew O’Reilly went 8:59.12, the only time under nine minutes as Marcellus (9:29.78) finished fourth.
In the pole vault, Patrick Mahoney, clearing 10’6″, beat out the Mustangs’ Andrew McCaffrey (10 feet) for the top spot as Skaneateles’ Alex Moro and Westhill’s Carter Buckman also topped 10 feet.
Brandon Mulholland got second place in the 3,200 in 10:26.18 and third in the 600 in 1:31.36, with Edward Popp fifth as Jon Gratien was fourth in the triple jump and Shamus Edlund fifth in the shot put.
Brian Allen, Brian Kenny, was second in the 1,000 in 2:50.79 and Drew O’Reilly, in 4:42.56, beat out Brian Kenny (4:46.55) for second place in the 1,600-meter run, with Evan Frost fourth in the 55 sprint.
Skaneateles also was fourth in the 4×400 in 3:54.05, two spots ahead of Westhill, with Jack Holst earning fourth place in the weight throw with 36’11 1/4″.
