CENTRAL NEW YORK – A new year has brought the same sort of success to the Jordan-Elbridge wrestling team that it enjoyed in the latter days of 2021.
The Eagles had an OHSL Liberty division match against Chittenango Wednesday night, and having close to a full roster on hand was important in a 36-27 win over the Bears.
Just twice did J-E win on the mat – at 126 pounds, where Henry Smith pinned Anthony Cavea in 3:18, and 132 pounds, where Jack Lamson earned his fall over Edward Geer early in the second period.
All of the Eagles’ other points came when Jacob Lafoce (138 pounds), Jack Smith (145 pounds), Isaac Svitavsky (160 pounds) and Bryce Rigby (172 pounds) claimed forfeits.
As this went on, Marcellus had its own league match, against Homer, but was held to four victories, all in bouts that stretched the full six minutes, as it lost to the Trojans 37-13.
Homer did benefit from a trio of forfeits, and it made the Mustangs earn every single point of its own, the only lopsided decision an 11-0 shutout by Colin Scherer over Hunter Lines at 126.
Gavin Ciota, at 132, followed by holding off Jeff Stauber 5-2, with Chris Doshna topping Chris Slade 8-3 at 145 pounds as Dan Okhman, wrestling at 160, held off David Morse 7-4. Ryder Donahue (172) went to overtime before taking a 3-1 defeat to Maddox Johnson.
West Genesee made its return to the win column Thursday night, taking on Rome Free Academy and earning a 54-18 victory over the Black Knights.
Derek Dishaw’s 35-second pin of Ryan Wright in the opener at 285 pounds was followed by four forfeits to Wildcats wrestlers – Austin Fesinger (102 pounds), Logan Willis (118), Jack Wade (138) and Maxx Fesinger (145).
Wrestling at 152 pounds, Sam Snyder pinned Levi Linder at the end of the first period as Colin McAvan (160) earned a second-period fall over Hunter Hallberg. Preston Elia (172) pinned Chase Dutcher in the second period before Omar Almlati (215) closed with a 68-second pin over Nyzijhir Ikema.
