CENTRAL NEW YORK – Once again, the West Genesee girls tennis doubles team of Angelina Llanos and Katie Viau will get an opportunity at reaching the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament.
Llanos and Viau advanced to the state qualifier this week at Drumlins Tennis Club after winning this week’s Section III Division I tournament.
With the top seed, Llanos and Viau had little resistance in Tuesday’s trio of matches at Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts, starting with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Christian Brothers Academy’s Lily Geneocco and Isabella Meade.
Then a 6-1, 6-0 romp over Liverpool’s Meghan Bell and Olivia Magnarelli preceded a semifinal where Llanos and Viau romped past Baldwinsville’s Reagan Doan and Julia Quinn 6-0, 6-1.
Moving to the final two days later at Oneida High School, Llanos and Viau were opposed by Liverpool’s Diana Kozenyatko and Gabby Underwood. A close first set turned when the Wildcats pair won the last two games to take it 7-5, going on to win the second set 6-2 for the sectional title.
WG’s two other doubles teams lost in the round of 16. Angelina Allen and Margaret Mello were a tie-breaker away from defeating Doan and Quinn but lost 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 as Kayla Latone and Hannah Sparks lost 6-1, 6-0 to CBA’s Grace Catalano and Aubrey Mills.
Isabella Allen, Helen Allen and Calina Olson all played singles for the Wildcats. Olson beat Ella Bouley (Auburn) 10-7) and Helena Allen topped Savannah Gunther (Central Square) by that same score before both lost to Liverpool players in the next round – Olson 6-2, 6-3 to Kelly Geiwitz, Allen 6-0, 7-5 to Angelica Underwood.
Other area tennis teams took part in the Division III tournament at Skytop, where Jordan-Elbridge standout Anisa Bort and Marcellus star Danielle Copp joined Llanos and Viau advancing to Drumlins in singles play.
Bort opened with a 6-0, 6-1 romp over Holland Patent’s Rayh Spatto, followed by a quarterfinal where she took out Cazenovia’s Clare Douglas 6-3, 7-5.
Meanwhile, Copp routed Cazenovia’s Baylee Pierce 6-0, 6-1 and then blanked Skaneateles’ Isabelle Soderberg 6-0, 6-0 before falling in the semifinals to Soderberg’s teammate, Lily Miller, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Miller had already beaten the Mustangs’ Maddie Vetsch 10-0 in the opening round, with Vetsch’s teammate, Lila Kelly, falling to Camden’s Lainie Liberatore 11-9 in the opening round.
In doubles, Marcellus had Korrine Kemp and Claire Wrona take a 7-6, 6-4 defeat to Cazenovia’s Quinlan Emhoff and Megan Kuhn, while Sydney Colon and Kara Wangness lost in that same round 6-3, 6-4 to Skaneateles’ Sofia Capozza and Rachel Hackler. Sophie Clarke and Shaelyn Kelly lost in the opening round.
Westhill had Mia Doss and Bridget Thornton reach the quarterfinals, one step short of the state qualifier, before a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Skaneateles’ Ella Danforth and Sophia Soderberg. Two other doubles sides, Isabella Johnson-Kathleen Rogers and Delaney Carroll-Jillian Eckert, lost in the opening round.
