PHOENIX – It was yet another instance where what happened in the regular season in boys golf did not repeat itself in the post-season – which suited Westhill just fine.
Led by Anthony Maglisco, the Warriors roared to the top of the standings in Tuesday’s Section III Class B fall tournament at Beaver Meadows Golf Club, getting the best of regular-season champion Christian Brothers Academy and five other opponents.
At the top was Maglisco, who along with CBA’s Joe Nicholson engaged in a spirited battle for low individual honors. In the end, they both shot three-under-par 69, eight shots clear of the field.
Team-wise, despite CBA’s 11-0 mark and Westhill going 9-4, it was the Warriors, with 390, comfortably in front of the Brothers’ total of 403 as Skaneateles finished third with 428.
Westhill started to go in front when two players, Aidan Ryan and Danny Young, shot 78 to join a large tie for fifth place with CBA’s Jack Gregory.
Then it was Devin Young shooting an 80, with Luke Gilmartin clinching the Warriors’ victory when his 85 equaled CBA’s Jack MacLachlan and Dan Angelo and beat Emmet Kilmartin by one. Grady Pens added a 92.
Meanwhile, Skaneateles saw Tommy DiRubbo shoot a 77, tying Chittenango’s Alex Moesch for third place. Lakers teammates Shawn Luce and Jack Marquardt tied for 10th place with 79, ahead of Jude Pas’cal (95) and Will Cowden (98) as Bode Gutchess saw 104.
Completing his season, Jordan-Elbridge golfer Colin Jewsbury put up an 87 to tie for 20th place.
Skaneateles then lost a narrow 212-213 decision to Cazenovia Wednesday at Skaneateles Country Club, though both sides beat Tully’s score of 245. Luce’s 37 was the low individual round as Marquardt shot a 40 and DiRubbo a 43.
West Genesee would go to Drumlins for its sectional Class AA tournament on Wednesday, and its Gold team finished fourth in the team event with a score of 412 behind Fayetteville-Manlius Green, Baldwinsville and Cicero-North Syracuse Blue.
Ben Glass and Connor Christie led the Wildcats, each shooting 81. Owen Zoanetti and Joe Snyder had matching totals of 83 as Ryan Till had an 84 and Max Lauricella an 85 in front of Cameron Hotaver’s 95.
WG Blue finished at 462, with Jason Clifton shooting the low round of 86. Anthony Pirro had a 90 in front of Max DeMass (93), Ashton Fassinger (95), Jake Eunich (98) and Nick Stemkoski (101).
A day earlier, WG Gold beat F-M Green head-to-head 182-190 at Westvale, with Christie and Glass both shooting 35 to lead all individuals.
Lauricella and Till, both posting 37, matched the Hornets’ low round from Colin Mott as Joe Snyder’s 38 equaled the Hornets’ trio of Velton Perry, Jack Antshel and Luke Weisiger.
WG Blue team put up good scores in last Monday’s match against Liverpool at Foxfire, even though it lost 198-205 to the Warriors.
DeMass shot a 40, not far from the 38s posted by Liverpool teammates Kyle Kirkby and Dominick Osbeck. Eunich, Stemkoski and Pirro all finished with 41 as Clifton shot a 42.
