ONONDAGA COUNTY – After a pair of defeats to open it season, the East Syracuse Minoa/Liverpool gymnastics team would make its way to the win column just before September ended.
The Spartans knocked off Rome Free Academy 123.7-101.5 last Tuesday night, led by the duo of Angelina Merulla and Katie DiMillo, who were second and third, respectively, in the all-around standings.
On the balance beam, Merulla scored 8.5, with DiMillo just behind her as she posted 8.3. It was the same on uneven bars, with Merulla’s 8.2 edging DiMillo’s 8.1.
DiMillo won the vault with an 8.4, with teammate Jenny Sun getting an 8.3, and she matched Merulla’s 8.0 on floor exercise as Sun scored 7.7.
Overall, it was RFA’s Haley Miller leading with 34.15, built up through wins in three apparatus as she scored 9.0 on the uneven bars. 8.7 on the beam and 8.4 on the floor. Her vault of 8.35 was just behind DiMullo.
When it returned to the mat last Wednesday night, Jamesville-DeWitt/Fayetteville-Manlius improved to 3-0 overall when it defeated Central Square 135.1-118.1.
Winning two apparatus, Catherine Rizzo had 9.0 on uneven bars and an 8.6 floor routine on her way to an all-around victory in 33.9. She also scored 8.0 on the vault.
Rachel McKean finished at 33.6 in the all-around, helped by her 9.2 on the beam, 8.5 on the floor and 8.0 vault, whlie Rylee Fishkin won the vault with 8.2.
Haydan McGinn’s 8.9 on uneven bars put her in second place, with Charlotte Ford earning 7.9 on the vault. Antoinette Sakellariou earned 9.1 on the beam and 8.2 on the floor. Central Square’s Sage Wolfe won the beam with a 9.4.
