CENTRAL NEW YORK – In the first of two important home matches, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls volleyball team welcomed West Genesee last Wednesday night and pulled off a three-set sweep of the Wildcats.
The 25-22, 25-17, 25-18 decision saw the Hornets threatened the most in the opening set by the Wildcats, but gradually taking more control as the match went along.
Zoe Myint earned 29 assists, with Rebekah Beasley and Molly McNany both earning 15 digs. Kaylene Nobel led the front line with 12 kills and added 13 digs as Amanda Groesbeck got six kills and Kalyna Dannenberg had four kills.
Prior to this, F-M had swept past Nottingham 25-4, 25-8, 25-10 last Monday night, getting eight aces from Molly McNany and Oksana Dannenberg, with McNany adding six digs.
Kaylene Nobel and Zoe Myint both earned five digs, to go with Myint’s 13 assists. Kalyna Dannenberg had four aces and two kills. Amanda Groesbeck, Rebekah Beasley and Hannah Williamson had three kills apiece.
Jamesville-DeWitt returned to action last week and earned a pair of victories, starting with a 25-9, 25-8, 25-9 sweep of PSLA-Fowler early in the week.
Sophia Ferris served up eight aces for the Red Rams, to go with seven kills. Shiela Phoha had five aces, with Shannon Kolberger and Cadence Milligan getting four aces apiece. Elsa Hardt had five kills and Cat DeForest added four kills. Milligan had eight assists and Yeva Balayan added five assists.
Then it was J-D against Central Square two nights later. Easy 25-14 and 25-17 wins in the first two sets were followed by a 25-20 loss in the third set, but the Rams routed the Redhawks 25-10 in the fourth set to close it out.
Hardt served up a career-best 13 aces, adding 10 kills, five blocks and four digs. Ferris also had 10 kills plus nine digs, while Phoha got four kills and Balayan three aces to go with her 23 assists as the primary setter.
This led to Friday’s match against Cortland, where J-D was not quite able to pull it out, falling in five sets to the Purple Tigers. Ferris got 13 kills and 17 digs, with Hardt adding 11 kills and Shiela Phoha getting 10 kills as Goodson matched Ferris earning 17 digs.
Bishop Grimes was 3-2 on the season following its 25-23, 25-23, 25-14 sweep of Bishop Ludden on Sept. 16 where Tori Sikorski had six kills, 10 digs and five aces, Avery Burnett adding five aces and 11 digs as Tori Coppola had 14 assists and Ashley Ince managed 13 digs.
As a follow-up a week later, the Cobras swept Syracuse Academy of Science 25-16, 25-22, 25-14. Remy Cleland, with 14 assists, fed passes to Burnette (six kills) and Ince (five kills) as Ince also served up seven aces. Sikorski and Josie Schembri picked up five aces apiece as Grimes gained 24 aces overall.
