ONONDAGA COUNTY – Even when it was defeated Sept. 8 by Baldiwnsville, the West Genesee girls soccer team had displayed plenty of firepower and an ability to hang close with most of its league rivals.
The Wildcats were 1-1-1 going into last Monday’s match against Auburn, where it leaned heavily on Eva Poissant in the course of shutting out the Maroons 4-0.
Not only did Poissant land a pair of goals, she assisted on WG’s other two scoring plays as Giovanna Vigliotti and Rylee Gonzalez convertted. Vigliotti also picked up an assist.
This set up a match against undefeated Cicero-North Syracuse two nights later, which proved difficult for the Wildcats as it was fully contained in a 3-0 defeat to the Northstars.
C-NS jumped out 2-0 by halftime and never let WG respond, despite a fair amount of chances. Each of the Wildcats’ nine shots got turned back by Avery Byrnes as Tori Iannotti had two of her team’s goals.
In a non-league game on Friday night, WG handled Homer 5-1, racing out to a 4-0 edge by halftime paced by Vigliotti, who would score twice. Sophia Snyder and Cooper also converted in the first half, and Poissant tacked on a second-half goal.
Less than 24 hours later, WG faced Christian Brothers Academy and managed to top the Brothers by the same 5-1 margin that it did with Homer.
What’s more, those five goals came from five different players as Poissant, Vigliotti, Maria Snyder, Anna Nelson and Rylee Gonzalez each took turns converting. Ellie McMahon got credit for an assist.
Meanwhile, Bishop Ludden was establishing itself as a prime league and sectional title contender with a fine all-around game. The Gaelic Knights were undefeated and unscored-upon going into last Monday’s game against Faith Heritage at the CNY Sports Centre.
And the Gaelic Knights stayed that way, blanking the Saints 3-0. Ashley Pawelczak, Ludden’s top goal-scorer, found the net again, with Faith Griffin and Norah Casey also netting goals as Ava Carpenter and Sophia Chemotti picked up assists. A scheduled game with Cato-Meridian later in the week was moved to Oct. 16.
Jordan-Elbridge inched back to the .500 mark (2-2) when it beat Altmar-Parish-Williamstown 3-2 last Tuesday night, scoring twice in the second half after a 1-1 first-half deadlock.
Taking 19 shots to the Blue Devils’ four, the Eagles saw Riley Crawfod, Ava Hildebrandt and Haley Root each find the net, with Avery Yard adding an assist.
In a tougher assignment at Cazenovia last Friday night, J-E gave up all of the goals in the first half of a 3-0 defeat, Juila Reff getting two of the Lakers’ three goals and the other going to Lily Clonan.
