DEWITT – For its second meet of the season, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team got the best of its neighbors from Jamesville-DeWitt.
Their head-to-head meet last Friday at J-D Middle School saw the Hornets top the Red Rams 101-77 and, in the process, get 14 different sectional qualifying times from its deep group of swimmers.
Emma Luttrell was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:13.17, just missing the state qualifying standard of 2:12.84, before she won 500 freestyle in 5:15.17, which broke a pool record set by Heather Nicholson back in 1989.
Hali Seidberg stood out, too, starting when she paired with Luttrell, Morgan Kingsley and Georgia Langan to go one minute, 54.58 seconds in the 200-yard medley relay.
Moving to individual events, Seidberg was victorious in the 50 freestyle in 27.16 seconds to teammate Kristen Iles’ 27.70, with Kate Millson (28.02) third as, in the 100 butterfly, Seidberg went 1:03.09 to beat the 1:06.18 from J-D’s Gwen Lister.
Langan, in 56.68 seconds, beat out Iles (59.95) as they went 1-2 in the 100 freestyle and also posted the quickest 100 backstroke time of 1:07.43 to edge the 1:07.64 from the Rams’ Claire Huyck.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Langan, Kingsley, Grace Reyna and Emma Luttrell tore through it in 1:44.60 with another F-M quartet going 1:49.47. A close 100 breaststroke had Kingsley going 1:11.29 to Lister’s 1:11.78.
J-D’s lone victory came in diving, where Abby McGuire earned 205.55 points and her teammate, Grace Evans, was second with 193.10 points.
Having already earned a win over Christian Brothers Academy on Sept. 9, J-D prevailed again last Tuesday by handling Mexico 103-83.
The Red Rams’ superior depth made up for the star power at the front of the Tigers’ roster, including Alexa von Holtz, who was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley in two minutes, 11.65 seconds and 100 breaststroke in 1:10.10.
As a starting point, J-D’s 200 medley relay team of Lister, Huyck, Olivia Ogata and Bianca Wales posted 2:02.37 to Mexico’s 2:06.08.
Huyck would, on her own, win the 100 backstroke in 1:07.63 and finish second in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.27, while Lister took second (2:21.78) to von Holtz in the 200 IM and, in 1:11.79, was close to the Tigers standout in the 100 breaststroke. Ogata was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:09.26.
McGuire won a high-quality diving competition, her 235.80 points just ahead of the 227.45 from Mexico’s Serena Bardin as the Rams’ Grace Evans was third with 202.20 points.
Sofia Bebla took second in the 50 freestyle in 28.60 seconds ahead of Wales (28.79), with the pair helping Lister and Lucy Heflin win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:53.37. Josie Coyne and Marianna Lorenzo helped Heflin and Huyck win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:20.26.
