ONONDAGA COUNTY – In his 17-plus seasons leading the East Syracuse Minoa boys soccer team, Mark Carr has achieved plenty, including a 2007 Section III Class A championship and a 2011 run to the Section III and regional Class A championships.
Now that has led to 200 career victories, a mark that Carr reached last Thursday night at Spartans Stadium when ESM pulled away to beat Central Square 7-2.
Charging to a 3-1 advantage by halftime, the Spartans continued to add to that margin late as Behudin Malkic scored twice, with Todd Durantini getting a goal and assist.
Caleb Tedesco, Evan deBerjeois, Eric Market and Garrett O’Donnell also earned goals, with assists going to Zach Shufelt, Justin Oakley and Joel Alvarez.
Two days earlier, ESM had picked up a big win when it SLA-Fowler 2-1, with goals by Shufelt and Alex Conzone proving enough. Dom Caruna added an assist as Spartans goalie Hamdija Causevic picked up four saves.
When ESM and Christian Brothers Academy boys soccer teams met up last Saturday afternoon, it was another chance for the Brothers to knock off a neighborhood rival.
A week earlier, CBA had blanked Jamesville-DeWitt 3-0 as Jack Griffith, Tyler Broschart and Connor Morgia each put in a goal, with assists credited to Andrew Kohlbrenner, Tom Leskoskie and Will Harrigan.
Now, against the Spartans, the Brothers would emerge on top again, this one a tense 1-0 battle decided by Chris Zajdel’s unassisted goal and a superb effort in the net by Finn Wheeler, who stopped all 12 of the ESM shots he faced.
J-D rebounded from the CBA loss reaching double digits on the scoreboard in a 10-0 romp over Auburn.
Max MacCaull had a part in half the scoring plays thanks to his three goals and two assists. Jake Mone had two goals and one assist, with single tallies going to Ntumba Mwepo, Ian McIntyre, Sam Bobrek, Josh Aitken and Ryan Brazell. Aiden Scott, Kai Brutsaert and Mike Meskos picked up assists.
Later that same Tuesday, CBA put away Homer 6-1, with only Harrigan scoring twice. Single goals went to Morgia, Griffith, John Masinde and Bruce Broadwell, with Ben Carrick earning a pair of assists. Kohlbrenner, Aiden Duggan and Luck DeLorenzo also had assists.
On Friday, J-D fought to a 2-1 win over Fulton, matching the Red Raiders’ lone second-half tally after taking a 1-0 halftime lead as MacCaull notched one goal and assisted on the other, by Brazell.
Fayetteville-Manlius scored six times in each half against Corcoran during a 12-0 romp of the Cougars.
On the night his older brother, Francesco, got his first goal for Syracuse University, Nino Pagano netted three goals and two assists, but had all kinds of help.
Tyler Goodman had a goal and three assists, with Evan Terreri scoring twice. Riley Warren-Nichols, Will Forbes, Tyler Koehne and Jai Ohri each had one goal and one assist, with Milo Sinclair and Stephen Probst also finding the net.
It was a lot closer against Liverpool on Saturday afternoon, but F-M pulled it out 2-1 largely due to Pagano’s pair of second-half goals that negated a Warriors tally.
Manlius-Pebble Hill began the week with head coach Don Ridall just three wins away from 600, but were delayed a bit from reaching that milestone in its only game action.
The Trojans lost, 2-0, to Mater Dei Academy last Wednesday, despite a wealth of scoring chances. Mater Dei goalie Alex Roberts stopped all 16 shots he faced as Stephen Hall netted a goal in each half.
Ridall’s 598th win would take place on Friday, with MPH shutting out Bishop Grimes 2-0. Arman Nizam notched one goal and assisted on Chance Mugabe’s tally, with Oliver Hewett also earning an assist. Cobras goalie Greg Docos made 10 saves, twice Ryan Kinane’s total.
