CICERO – Competing at home, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team was intent on making sure no one took the Section III Class AA championship away from Bragman Stadium.
The Northstars scored points in every event except one, finished with 121 points, and earned the sectional title Wednesday despite a spirited challenge from Baldwinsville, who finished second with 99 points. Liverpool tied West Genesee and Rome Free Academy for third place with 54 points.
In the first race of the afternoon, the 4×800 relay, C-NS quickly got into the win column, seeing Evan Romano, Evan Breitbeck, Tyler Murray and Matt LeClair finish in eight minutes, 24.69 seconds.
Then the Northstars went 1-2 in the 110 high hurdles, Isaiah Wright prevailing in 15.55 seconds to the 16.34 from Carlton Garnes. Jacob Schmid found the win column in the 400 hurdles, going 1:00.01 to edge B’ville’s Luke DeFio (1:01.13), with Wright fifth in 1:05.44.
Garnes got a victory of his own in the triple jump by going 41 feet 1/4 inch, having also gained fifth place in the long jump with a leap of 20’10 3/4″.
Gavin McAllister was victorious in the pole vault as the only competitor to clear 10 feet, with Maxwell White throwing the shot put 44’3″ for second place
Sam Nessel, in the 200-meter dash, got second place in 27.79 seconds, inches behind the 27.77 from Utica Proctor’s Azzan Johnson, this after Nessel took sixth in the 100-meter dash in 11.37 seconds. Nessel, Schmid, Tyler Murray and James McConnell were second (3:35.27) to B’ville (3:33.47) in the 4×400 relay.
LeClair was also third in the 800-meter run in 2:13.90, with Breitbeck fourth in 2:16.87. Tyler Murray took third in the 400-meter dash in 52.12 seconds, with Jadin Tinker (54.80) in sixth as Ashton Murdock was third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:30.23, with LeClair sixth.
Liverpool earned its lone victory on the track in the 800 thanks to Ryan Hagan, who went 2:02.15 to pull away from Fayetteville-Manlius’ Will Seamans (2:07.08), to go with a fourth (11:08.38) in the 3,200. ‘
Bennett Robb beat the field in the high jump by clearing 6’2″ as C-NS had Jake Tschopp (5’8″) in sixth place. Jake McGowan took second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:37.48, with Romano (11:24.18) fifth.
The Warriors contended in the 4×100 relay, where Jason Swanson, Ny’Quez Madison, Owen Jarosz and Josiah Dickens went 45.42 seconds, just behind Nottingham’s winning 45.13 as C-NS was fourth in 46.11.
Liverpool also was third in the 4×800 as Ryan Cartwright, Ryan Hagan, Jack Sherlock and Aiden Meyer posted 8:36.20, with the Warriors fifth in the 4×400 in 3:43.01. Jake McGowan got to third place in the 1,600 in 4:33.51, two spots ahead of LeClair (4:36.77) in fifth.
