CENTRAL NEW YORK – Following an 8-1-1 regular season in the fall, the Baldwinsville boys golf team was geared up to try and earn the Section III Class AA championship, even if it had to wait eight months for a resolution.
When the sectional tournament finally took place Monday at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course, Aidan Farmer would go to the top of the standings – but the Bees could not quite match that finish.
B’ville’s team total of 338 beat out the efforts from West Genesee (352) and Cicero-North Syracuse Blue (357), but was seven shots behind Fayetteville-Manlius, who won with a 331.
Farmer would shoot an eight-over-par 80 to lead B’ville and ultimately tie two Hornets players, Velton Perry and Andrew Heyman, for the top individual score among the AA participants.
Nate McGregor, shooting an 83, was right behind them, with Alex Pompo shooting an 86. Billy Guild finished with an 89 and Evan Thrasher posted a 99.
To stay in front, F-M needed an 84 from Matt LaCombe, who is also the goalie on the Hornets’ boys lacrosse team, and an 87 from Jack Sommers.
When it was the turn of B’ville’s girls golfer to vie for sectional honors a day later at Kanon Valley, the weather – and the opposition – turned against them.
A two-plus hour delay for heavy rains shortened the tournament from 18 to nine holes, and the Bees would ultimately take fourth place in a time-team field.
B’ville’s score of 202 was behind the winning 174 posted by F-M Green (whom the Bees beat in the regular season) as Liverpool finished second at 187 and Utica-Notre Dame was third with 192.
Colleen Vredenburg led the Bees, posting a 44 in her nine holes to tie for seventh place, not far from the 37s that Liverpool’s Mia Avotins and F-M’s Lucy Fowler produced as Avotins earned the individual title in a two-hole playoff.
Cara Vredenburg finished with a 47, putting her in a tie for 11th place, while Maragret Dec had a 49 that gave her a tie for 17th place. Jessica Bilynsky finished with a 62.
