ONONDAGA COUNTY – Once again ,the Jamesville-DeWitt softball team has established itself as the standard-bearer in the Section III Class A ranks heading into this week’s playoffs.
The Red Rams got an impressive 16-1 victory over Central Square on May 27, prevailing on the basis of five runs in the first two innings and then an 11-run eruption in the bottom of the sixth.
Katie Dorazio and Miriam Zoghby set the tone at the top of the order, each picking up four hits and combining to score seven runs as Dorazio doubled twice and got three RBIs.
Katie White doubled twice and drove in four runs, with Emily Bulone’s single and two doubles leading to three RBIs as Maddy Ancone, Avery Young and Bella Sindoni had one RBI apiece. Kaira McMahon held the Redhawks to three hits in her complete-game pitching effort.
In the rain on May 28, J-D blasted Fulton 24-4, needing just four innings and peaking with a 10-run third led by Ancone’s home run and five RBIs. Katie White went four-for-four as she and Emma White both drove in a pair of runs and scored four times, Emily Bulone scoring five runs after four walks and a single.
Keeping this up a day later, J-D blanked West Genesee 14-0, then rested until last Thursday afternoon, when it faced Cortland and pounded the Purple Tigers 17-2.
All 17 runs came in the second and third innings, where Miriam Zoghby picked up three hits and Ancone scored three runs. Bulone, McMahon and Katie White each doubled and scored twice.
Even wilder was J-D’s 37-0 win over Syracuse City which included a 17-run third inning and Bulone recording nine RBIs through her four hits as Katie White drove in five runs, Ancone had four RBIs and Dorazio, Zoghby and Madeline Magle got three RBIs apiece.
This led to a regular-season finale and second clash with East Syracuse Minoa and, unlike their earlier meeting, J-D didn’t wait to get its bats going in a 20-5 victory over the Spartans.
Six-run rallies in the second and third innings proved decisive, with Katie White getting a double, two singles and five RBIs. McMahon had three hits and drove in three runs as Young and Bulone also had three-hit outings and Dorazio earned a pair of RBIs. ESM did get a double and three RBIs from Olivia Goff.
Prior to that, ESM had routed Fulton 19-4 last Wednesday, with six runs in the first two innings and a nine-run fourth inning to pull further away.
Goff and Alana Day both hit home runs, finishing with three RBIs apiece as Goff scored four times. Morgan Ransom and Raychel Underwood each drove in a pair of runs. Sierra Daly and Jaylianna Sabatino both scored two runs.
Christian Brothers Academy got a 3-1 win over Skaneateles on May 27 and then, two days later, met up with ESM and defeated the Spartans 6-2.
Kenzie Witz’s double and three RBIs led the Brothers at the plate, with Sierra Burke driving in two runs and Julia Griffith added an RBI. Maya Geiss pitched a complete game.
CBA made it three in a row last Tuesday with a late-game surge to beat Jordan-Elbridge 11-3, the Btrothers using four runs in the sixth inning and five runs in the seventh to erase the Eagles’ 3-2 advantage.
The win streak ended a day later with a 7-4 loss to Baldwinsville, even though Geiss brought the power with a pair of home runs that accounted for all four of CBA’s runs. Bianca DeSellems, Gabrielle Carr and Brooklin Ward had two RBIs apiece for the Bees.
B’ville had, the day before, ripped past Fayetteville-Manlius 15-1 as the Hornets fell to 4-6 overall, but the Hornets bounced back Thursday to handle West Genesee 10-2 before a 10-3 defeat to Liverpool.
Against the Wildcats, Paige Murphy and Sophie Woodridge each notched three hits and scored twice. Morgan Napier’s pair of hits led to two RBIs as Gwen O’Connor, Kaleigh Hamilton and Katrina Rivera also drove in runs.
F-M, as the no. 3 seed in the Class AA sectional bracket, meets no. 2 seed Liverpool in Thursday’s semifinals. By then, J-D, the top seed in Class A, may have faced CBA, who as the no. 8 seed had an opening-round game against no. 9 seed Fulton for the right to face the Red Rams as ESM, the no. 5 seed, meets no. 4 seed Whitesboro in the quarterfinals.
