ONONDAGA COUNTY – Turning toward the latter portion of this crowded regular-season slate, girls lacrosse teams from Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy both had great opportunities at earning season-defnining victories.
In F-M’s case, it involved traveling to Bragman Stadium to face Cicero-North Syracuse for the second time in four days and, once again, dropping a narrow 15-13 decision to the Northstars.
As the season has progressed, the Hornets’ attack has diversified away from Ava Angello, which was evident as it worked its way to an 8-6 halftime lead.
This continued into the second half, with Victoria Horton and Grace Reyna both scoring twice to augment Angello’s five goals. Lillian Coleman and Caroine Steigerwald both had a goal and two assists, with Julianna Cogliandro and Halle Daino also finding the net.
And it still wasn’t enough to fend off C-NS’s late surge, led by Fran Tortora, who netted six goals and added a pair of assists as Molly Malchanoff and Angela Beardsley both got three-goal hat tricks.
Meanwhile, at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, CBA took the measure of reigning sectional Class A champion Baldwinsville and was in the battle all the way to the end before falling 12-10 to the Bees.
Having dropped a close 15-13 decision at West Genesee on May 15, CBA would challenge itself again at B’ville, but meet with the exact same result, a two-goal defeat.
Each half followed a similar pattern, with the Brothers’ attack finding some success, but not quite enough to keep pace with the Bees, who effectively clung to its slim lead in the closing minutes.
Gracie Britton and Bella Roberson continued to put up big numbers, Britton earning five goals and one assist and Roberson scoring four times while adding an assist. Amelia Bonacci added a goal and two assists.
B’ville was able to spread out its production a bit more, Olivia Muscolino getting four goals as Emma Gebhardt and Sophia Muscolino both scored twice, Gebhardt adding two assists to overcome Olivia Hayden’s eight saves.
CBA went from these games to a 15-3 win over Chittenango on Thursday where 11 different players scored by game’s end, led by Britton’s three goals and one assist.
Lilah Kirch scored twice as she and Hannah Goldberg both got two goals. Bonacci had a goal and three assists as Roberson, Bella DeRegis, Emily Jones, McKenna Dalto, Bella Cannizzo, Maggie Niles and Talia Cannizzo also converted.
Then, turning to its own game against C-NS on Saturday, CBA again got close – and again lost, 13-11, with Roberson’s five goals not enough as Brooke and Molly Malchanoff both scored five times to pace the Northstars.
Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa went head-to-head last Tuesday night, with the Red Rams picking up its fourth consecutive victory as it topped the Spartans 13-5.
By herself, the Red Rams’ Everly Kessler outscored ESM as she got six goals, the passes often coming from Kailey McKenna, who scored twice to go with her four assists.
