CENTRAL NEW YORK – At the tail end of another busy week of baseball, Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse Minoa will get the measure of each other, and both sides are likely to need to win in order to straighten themselves out.
Back on Monday, J-D challenged undefeated Cortland, and the game went nine innings before the Red Rams fell to the Purple Tigers 8-7.
The Rams had broke out with five runs in the top of the third, only to have Cortland score four times in the bottom of the third.
Even with a two-run sixth, J-D couldn’t put the game away, the Purple Tigers catching up and winning it in the ninth led by Caden Albright and Kooper Knabe each earning three RBIs.
In the rematch at J-D 24 hours later, the Rams lost again to Cortland, this time in a 9-5 game where, trailing 6-1, it pulled closer in the late stages before the Purple Tigers used three runs in the top of the seventh to secure its sixth win in a row.
Carter King still hit a home run and finished with a pair of RBIs. Matt Alexander got two hits, walked and drove in three runs as Will Doran added an RBI. Albright got four RBIs to pace Cortland.
ESM had returned to action last Thursday and, taking its own shot at ending Cortland’s win streak, produced plenty of runs, yet still lost 15-10.
A wild fifth inning proved decisive. Down 5-2, the Spartans struck for five runs in the top of the fifth, only to have the Purple Tigers counter with an eight-run rally. Jacob White still finished with a double and four RBIs as Brad Herrington drove in a pair of runs.
The Friday sequel with Cortland was far more lopsided, ESM beaten 21-2 as the Purple Tigers scored in each of the first six innings, led by Tyler Blake’s home run, double and six RBIs. Jacob White drove in both of the Spartans’ runs.
Though it was a bit closer against Christian Brothers Academy on Saturday, ESM still lost 10-1, with Spencer Carnival scoring his team’s lone run in the bottom of the first before the Brothers took charge.
