ONONDAGA COUNTY – Another busy week of area high school track and field got an early start last Monday when East Syracuse Minoa braved cold temperatures and won both sides of its meet against PSLA-Fowler.
In the girls meet, the Spartans rolled past the Falcons 127-12, with Rhiannon Butchko at the forefront as Butchko cleared 4 feet 10 inches in the high jump and had a top long jump of 15’5”.
Rylie King was first in the 200-meter dash in 29.0 seconds. Kaleigh Maloof took the 100 hurdles in 17.4 seconds, had a triple jump of 31’10” and helped King and Butchko as the Spartans took the 4×100 relay in 53.9 seconds.
ESM also swept the distance races, from Elena Vespi tearing to first in the 800-meter run in 2:06.2 to Rachael Ladd going 5:50.0 in the 1,500 and Mary Roach running the 3,000 in 11:56.
Evanni McDuffie claimed the 100-meter dash in 13.2 seconds, with Lilia Pena first in the 400-meter dash in 1:08.7 as Aryanna Finkelstein threw the shot put 28’8” and Sophia Jackson threw the discus 85’7”. Pena and Vespi were on ESM’s winning 4×400 relay team that went 4:56.6.
The boys meet was much closer, but ESM prevailed 78-62 with Rocky El again making a star turn, unleashing a triple jump of 44 feet 6 inches while also taking the 110 hurdles in 15.7 seconds.
Kevin Hasty swept the throwing events with a discus throw of 114’9” and a shot put toss of 38’6” as Bennett Ferrari beat the field in the 400 sprint in 55.7 seconds, Aidan Hirt went 23.4 seconds to take the 200 sprint as Jayden Evans, Luke Mancini, Logan Michaels and Sol Scofield were first in the 4×800 relay in 11:57.2.
ESM competed again Friday, against Oswego, and the boys pulled out a 71-69 decision over the Buccaneers where El won the 100 in 11.1 seconds, the 110 hurdles in 15.4 seconds and the triple jump by going 44’6”.
Just like he did against Fowler, Hasty won both the discus (105’7”) and shot put (35’11 1/4”), with Ferrari topping 7 feet in the pole vault and Hirt taking the 200 in 23.3 seconds. Sol Scofield won the 800 in 2:18.7 and the Spartans ran the 4×100 in 45.9 seconds.
A more lopsided girls meet had ESM handle Oswego 107-30, where Ladd was first in the 1,500 in 5:46.3 and also beat the field in the 400 hurdles in 1:24.4 as Butchko cleared 5’3” in the high jump. Jackson threw the discus 97’6” and Finkelstein threw the shot put 31’1 1/4”.
Maloof went from a triple jump of 31′ 1/2” to topping 6’6” in the pole vault, while King (100 sprint), Vespi (800), Roach (3,000), Akout Kuany (100 hurdles) and Arianna Brennen (long jump) also won.
Fayetteville-Manlius went up against Cicero-North Syracuse last Wednesday at Bragman Stadium and lost both sides of that meet, the girls taking a 75-62 defeat and the boys falling 103-34 to the Hornets.
C-NS won most of the boys events, but F-M did see Peyton Geehrer run 1,600 meters in 4:32.14 and then break the 10-minute mark in the 3,200-meter run, winning in 9:55.27.
F-M’s teams did win on Saturday, against Nottingham, where the Hornets prevailed 81-48 in the boys event and the girls beat the Bulldogs 111-18.
Samantha Pynn won four times for the girls Hornets, running the 200 in 26.4 seconds and the 100 in 13.4 seconds as she also had a top long jump of 15’9” and triple jump of 34 feet.
Grace Kaercher posted times of 4:47.85 in the 1,500 and 10:56.10 in the 3,000, while Hannah Kaercher took the 800 in 2:18.99. Elizabeth Bansbach won the 400 hurdles in 1:16.9 as Harper Stoppacher cleared 5’3” in the high jump and Isabel Zuber was first in the discus.
Christian Brothers Academy lost both sides of last Wednesday’s meet to Institute of Technology Central, falling 78-25 in the boys meet and 63-31 in the girls meet.
