CAZENOVIA – Making it two wins in as many weeks, the Cazenovia boys track and field team proved too much for its fellow Lakers from Skaneateles in last Tuesday’s showdown at Buckley-Volo Field, which also featured Living Word Academy.
Cazenovia prevailed 96.5-44.5 and, in the process, saw distance runner Jared Smith set a new school record in the 1,600-meter run.
Smith covered the near-mile distance in four minutes, 34.54 seconds, just beating the mark of 4:34.90 set by Sean Satchwell back in 2015.
Part of it, no doubt, was having Smith chase Skaneateles star Caleb Bender, the 2019 state Class C cross country champion, who won the 1,600 in 4:28 flat, but Smith would later earn a victory in the 3,200-meter run in 10:16.2.
Slater DeLeon won three events for Cazenovia, sprinting to first in the 100-meter dash in 11.1 seconds to edge Jack McNerney’s 11.3 and then 23.1 seconds to hold off McNerney (23.2) in the 200-meter dash.
Finally, in the long jump DeLeon had a top leap of 20 feet 3 inches, with Dylan Albicker second at 18’3”, though it was Albicker taking the triple jump with 37’6” as Dan Milison was second with 33’6 1/2”.
Elijah Clement pulled off a unique double of his own, taking the discus with a throw of 88’10” to edge Living Word’s Ben Euto (88’5”), and then turning to the pole vault where he cleared 8 feet as Slator Clement (7’6”) was second.
Cooper Hughes, who won the 800-meter run in 2:04.6, would also run a leg in the 4×400 relay, pairing with Andrew Kent, Alex Lansing and Jacob Ives as Cazenovia prevailed in 3:43.6.
Kent had his own star turn in the 400-meter dash, tearing to victory in 49.4 seconds, with Michael Senehi going 1:05.3 to take the 400 hurdles as Lansing finished third. And in the 4×100 relay, Lansing, McNerney, Ives and Charles Kubinec earned first place in 46.7 seconds.
