ONONDAGA COUNTY – Though most of the attention in area girls volleyball centered around Marcellus ending the 44-match win streak of Westhill, two other local teams were also carrying unbeaten marks.
Jordan-Elbridge had won five in a row leading up to last Tuesday’s match against Weedsport, and then improved to 6-0 by sweeping the Warriors 25-14, 25-17, 27-25.
Abby Ahern was responsible for 17 of the Eagles’ service points, including eight aces. Gabby Smart added five aces as Sarah Lane earned seven assists. Paige Lane got nine digs as Elizabeth Bartoszewski earned six digs.
Then J-E got a seventh consecutive win Thursday night, against Cato-Meridian, whom it had to subdue in five sets on March 26, but now was much more impressive as it topped the Blue Devils 25-13, 25-12, 25-16.
Smart, in particular, handled things on the front line, putting away 14 kills, while Ahern finsihed with four kills. Paige Lane put up seven aces as Carrie Williams and Gabrilele Skotinski gained three aces apiece.
Up against Hannibal Friday, J-E did not let up one bit, inching closer to a perfect season while taking down this other set of Warriors 25-22, 25-14, 25-19.
Sarah Lane, with her five aces and 19 assists, often passed it to Ahern, who had nine kills, and Paige Lane, who had five kills to go with 12 digs, four aces and three assists. Bartoszewski stood out with 16 digs and Taylor Eaton had seven digs, plus three kills.
Solvay put its 4-0 record on the line against Bishop Grimes last Tuesday night and swept that match, stopping the Cobras 25-13 in each of the first two sets and 25-21 in the third.
Myah Platler paced the Bearcats’ front line with seven kills as Margaret Kemp got four kills. Alicia Granger served up six aces as Toni Sardo got 12 assists and Brayla Bagozzi added nine assists. Jordan Bamba stepped up with nine digs.
Off until the end of the week, the Bearcats swept Manlius-Pebble Hill on Saturday afternoon to make it six wins in a row. Granger led with seven kills as Platler and Olivia Petralito had six kills apiece, Sardo gaining 15 assists and Bagozzi picking up 10 assists.
As for West Genesee, it lost in three close sets to Liverpool 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 last Monday despite Olivia Snyder’s 17 assists and six aces. Phoebe Andeson had six kills, but no other Wildcat had more than three kills as Izzy Allen and Grace Lannon gained seven digs apiece.
WG turned it around on Wednesday night, sweeping Corcoran 25-7, 25-11, 25-21, with Rylee Kieffer and Cami Zajac each recording four aces. Clancy got 16 assists, with Alexix Rydelek earning five kills and Snyder getting four kills, plus seven digs.Allen and Gianna Corbin had three kills apiece.
Then the Wildcats made it back-to-back wins Saturday, handling East Syracuse Minoa 25-18, 25-19, 25-22. Allen, with 10 kills, and Anderson, with seven kills, led the front line as Snyder picked up 30 assists, matching Allen’s four aces.
Bishop Ludden moved to 4-1 on the season last Tuesday by sweeping Syracuse Academy of Science 25-17, 25-20, 25-17.
Jasmine Cuffee led the Gaelic Knights with seven kills, while Kate Ruddy had six kills and six assists. Rachel Sherwood added four kills and Allison Bradley got three kills as Amelia Adams put together 11 assists.
Then Ludden lost Thursday to Bishop Grimes 25-17, 25-19, 25-21, despite Ruddy’s 15 assists, five aces and three kills. Cuffee gained eight kills and three digs, with Sarah Fink adding six digs. Paige Smith added four assists.
In Saturday’s match against Living Word Academy, Ludden claimed the second set 25-20 after a 25-21 first-set defeat, only to have the Lions take the next two sets 25-16 and 25-18. Cuffee had eight kills and six digs, with Ruddy managing 17 assists and Fink earning eight digs.
