CAMILLUS – Moving to 2-2 on the season, the West Genesee boys swim team got contributions from all over its lineup last Wednesday night on the way to defeating the Auburn Maroons 87-52.
Once again, the Wildcats’ divers put up strong scores. Justin Byrne led the way, earning 250.65 points, while Parker McIlroy picked up 219.22 points and Bryan Reichert finished with 203.78 points.
Several different individuals took their turns winning races, including Matt Barrington, who went two minutes, 25.52 seconds to take the 200-yard individual medley and then went 1:13.38 to edge Auburn’s Michael Villano (1:13.84) in the 100 breaststroke.
Jack Iles also won twice, covering the 50 freestyle in 26.25 seconds over Auburn’s Colin Ringwood (27.30) and going 57.92 seconds to prevail in the 100 freestyle.
It all started with Keegan Scharoun, who broke the two-minute mark while winning the 200 freestyle in 1:58.66. Aidan Sperduti was first in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.74 as Alex Shuron won the 500 freestyle in 5:34.75, holding off the Maroons’ Riley Fitzgerald (5:37.28) in the longest race on the card.
Ryan Goshow posted the fastest 100 backstroke time of 1:13.11 over Auburn’s Matt Crouse (1:14.53) right after Iles, Scharoun, Krystian Lata and Preston Vella swam the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.21.
In the opening 200 medley relay, Iles, Lata, Joe McManus and Chase Foresti finished in 2:03.13. Barrington, Scharoun, Angus Tarolli and Aiden Corbin were first in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.66.
All of this preceded Friday’s meet against undefeated Liverpool, where WG fell to the Warriors, who were led by two wins apiece from Griffin Merkling (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke) and Nathan Alexander (200 and 500 freestyle).
The Wildcats won its season opener 104-78 over Syracuse on Jan. 22 before taking losses to Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt/Christian Brothers Academy in the weeks that followed.
