On separate tracks once more, the Cicero-North Syracuse field hockey inched closer to achieving an undefeated regular season while Liverpool sought improvement on any front.
Sporting an eight-game win streak as it ventured to Camden last Wednesday night, the Northstars made it nine in a row, expertly taking apart the Blue Devils in a 3-0 decision.
Camden, last year’s Section III Class C champions, arrived at this game with a 5-2 record, but even that mark and home-field advantage did little to deter the Northstars.
A first-quarter goal quickly got C-NS in front, and again the defense protected the lead, limiting the Blue Devils to just two shots, both stopped by Ally Wagner.
It was Chrissy Wagner’s third-quarter goal which gave the Northstars some cushion, and it scored again later as Wagner also got an assist, with Jamie Snyder and Gabby Wameling earning the other goals.
As for Liverpool, who had twice lost to C-NS by a combined 9-1 margin this fall, it could not turn around things in another rematch against a league foe last Monday, falling 3-1 to Fayetteville-Manlius.
Shut out 2-0 by the Hornets on Oct. 5 at home, the Warriors again found itself in catch-up mode most of the way, though it did get on the board with Chloe Muller’s goal, assisted by Riley Techmanski.
F-M still controlled the game, though, with Lucy Fowler and Amanda Hibbard each getting one goal and one assist as Sarah Porter netted the other goal, overcoming McKenna Ecker’s seven saves.
Back home Wednesday to face Weedsport, the two sets of Warriors played to a 0-0 draw. Ecker stopped all five shots she faced and Liverpool got six shots, all of them turned back by Mariah Quigley.
Then it was Liverpool against Cortland Friday night, and the Warriors earned its second win of the season, claiming a 3-1 decision over the Purple Tigers.
Three different players – Rebekah Davie, Mia Berthoff and Caitlyn Guilfoil – picked up Liverpool’s three goals, with assists credited to Riley Techmanski and Abigail Kozikoski. Ecker was valuable, too, recording six saves.
Liverpool hosts Auburn and East Syracuse Minoa this week. C-NS’s game with Canastota last Thursday got canceled, but it still had four games left going into November, going to Baldwinsville and Cortland this week.
