It had already proven a memorable month for the Baldwinsville bowling program thanks to the boys Bees’ victory in the Feb. 9 Section III Division I tournament.
As the boys Bees began a month of practice and preparation for the March 14 state tournament at Strike-N-Spare Lanes, three members of the B’ville girls team wanted to join them.
Julia Speich, Jenna Speich and Amelia Ponto were all part of the 38-player field in the Section III Shootout, held last Thursday at Rome’s King Pin Lanes. At stake was just two spots on the Section III All-Star team for the state tournament.
With games of 179, 212 and 172 early, Jenna Speich put herself in the top half of the field. She then shot 179 in the fourth game, improved to a 216 in the fifth game but fell to 138 in the final game.
Still, that 1,096 game put Jenna Spiech in 12th place, three spots ahead of Julia Speich, whose 216 fifth game and 212 second game, plus a pair of 179s, helped her finish with a 1,038 aggregate.
Ponto was behind them, opening with a 198, but never improving on that total as she had two other games of 177 and, with 999, was alone in 17th place.
It was Fulton’s Alexis Ingersoll (1,350) and Liverpool’s Ashley Hardy (1,315) who finished on top at the sectional Shootout, the only two bowlers to average better than 200 per game.
They joined Utica Proctor’s Kaitlynn Conte (Tri-Valley), Auburn’s Kaylee Hodson (SCAC), Sherburne-Earlville’s Olivia Fehlner (CSC) and Christian Brothers Academy’s Elaina Occhino (OHSL), who had the top regular-season averages in their respective leagues.
