Of the three area high school girls volleyball teams with a winter schedule, only Christian Brothers Academy got to the Section III playoffs.
Set up as a no. 5 seed in an eight-team Class B bracket, the Brothers would go on the road last Thursday night to face no. 4 seed Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in the quarterfinals.
As it turned out, the opening set was decisive. Many different times, CBA had a chance to get out in front by winning the set, but the Red Devils denied them.
At 28-28, VVS won the serve back, got the set point it needed to win it 30-28, and proceeded to defeat the Brothers 25-15 and 25-21 in the next two sets.
Karli Doig had 35 assists for the Red Devils, her passes often going to LeeAnne Lowery, who had 18 kills and nine digs. Sadie Riggs had nine kills and eight digs as Lauren Schaefer got seven kills.
VVS advanced to a sectional semifinal against undefeated top seed Mount Markham, ultimately hoping to advance to this Saturday’s championship round at Jamesville-DeWitt.C
CBA, meanwhile, finished a 9-8 season, graduating Kristen DeLorenzo, who earned more than 1,000 digs in her career and is the program’s all-time leader in aces. Gia Anthony, Delaney Della Donna and Lauren Griffith also graduate.
