When a long afternoon and evening of Onondaga High School League indoor track and field action concluded Wednesday at SRC Arena, it was the Westhill girls emerging as Division I champions.
Earning 117 points, the Warriors fended off the likes of Skaneateles, who was third with 82 points. On the boys side, it was the Lakers second with 80 points and the Warriors third (75 points) behind Cazenovia’s winning 131 points.
Ashley Heffernan prevailed twice for Westhill’s girls, going 9.17 seconds to pull away and take the 55-meter hurdles as Lauren Holstein was fifth. In the pole vault, Heffernan won again, topping 8 feet as she also finished fifth in the long jump, with Holstein sixth.
Ashley Bolesh also won twice, going 3:15.50 at 1,000 meters to hold off Skaneateles’ Sarah Tallerico (3:16.26) as the Lakers also had Caroline Wells in fifth place. Bolesh beat the field in the triple jump, too, going 34’5”.
The Warriors were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:28.03, just behind Cazenovia’s 4′:27.35 as Skaneateles finished fourth, Westhill also second in the 4×800 in 10:44.87.
Kennedy Rose was second (1:48.23) to Cazenovia’s Grace Dolan (1:47.90) at 600 meters, with Addie Lowery third in 1:49.62. Ryan Murphy had a third-place shot put toss of 29 feet. Katherine Evans was fourth in the 3,000-meter run.
For Skaneateles, Tallerico was victorious at 1,500 meters in 5:06.59, with Westhill’s Liz Kessler third in 5:18.83. Reagan Evans had a winning weight throw of 33′ 1/2” as Sarah Brennan was third with 27’6 3/4” and Murphy was fifth.
Emme Conan went 7.47 seconds in the 55-meter dash, one-hundredth of a second behind Syracuse ITC’s Fannie Kumeh (7.46), with Westhill’s Angie Mesa fourth and Za’Myaa Williams fifth.
Conan also was second in the 300-meter dash in 43.51 seconds, edging Mesa (43.53) in third place as Ryan Murphy was fifth. Tess Peterson was third in the long jump with 16′ 1/4” and third in the triple jump with 33’2 1/2” to go with a fifth in the high jump as the Lakers finished third in the 4×200 relay in 1:52.79.
In the boys OHSL Division I meet, Skaneateles had Caleb Bender go 3,200 meters in 9:58.28 to pull away from the field, with teammate Will Girzadas fourth.
Moving to the 1,600-meter run, Bender prevailed again in 4:39.74 to edge teammate Matt Persampieri’s 4:39.78. And in the 4×800, Bender, Persampieri, Joe Norris and Tony DiRubbo won in 8:50.44 to Westhill’s second-place 9:10.31.
Emil Sander rose to third in the long jump, going 19′ 1 1/4”. The Lakers were third in the 4×400 in 3:52.02, two spots ahead of Westhill, also taking fourth in the 4×200.
Westhill had Mike Ferrara win twice, going 38.63 seconds in the 300 and beating the beating the field in the 600 in 1:27.41 as Brian Kenny was fourth and the Lakers’ Joe Norris fifth.
The Warriors’ Brandon Mulholland won the 1,000 in 2:48.67,. Angelo Carr was second in the 3,200 in 10:40.79, with Jacob Fricano fifth in the 1,600 as Ben Helfeld had a second-place weight throw of 39’11 1/4”, with the Lakers’ Payton Sweet in fourth place. Evan Frost finished fourth in the high jump.
Marcellus also had some top results, finishing fifth in both divisions, including a victory in the boys triple jump from Peter McCaffrey, who posted 38’11”, more than a foot ahead of the field, and the girls high jump, where Sophia Shaw cleared 5 feet as teammate Heidi Steigerwald (4’8”) was third and Westhill’s Madison Scheirer fourth.
Ryan White went 38.65 seconds in the 300, inches behind Ferrara and ahead of Sander (38.81) in third place. Jonah Kwasnowski took third in the 55 hurdles in 8.59 seconds.
The Mustangs were third in the 4×800 as Kevin Huss tied Westhill’s Aaron Thornton for third in the pole vault, each clearing 8’6”, and got fifth place in the 1,000 and Ryan White sixth in the 55-meter dash.
Anella Bolster was third in the 3,000 in 11:56.43, with Brielle McShane fourth in the 600, Lauren Meyers fifth in the triple jump and Peggy Morocco sixth in the 300 as the Mustangs took fifth in the 4×800 and 4×200.
As for Solvay, X’zavier Morris won the boys shot put for the Bearcats, heaving it 42’3 1/2” to beat out Skaneateles’ Ben Euto, who was second with 40’3 ¾’ as Westhill’s Ben Helfeld was fourth. Cole Bagozzi was fifth in the 55 sprint in 6.90 seconds, with Allen Cawthon seventh.
Erica Bagozzi earned second place in the pole vault for the Solvay girls, clearing 8 feet. Sophia Guadagnolo finished sixth in the shot put, ahead of Emily Britton in seventh place.
