Back from its holiday break, the Chittenango girls volleyball team now had some company on the court as the boys Bears got its regular season underway.
With a 4-1 record, Chittenango began 2020 with a one-sided match against Fabius-Pompey last Monday, blitzing the Falcons 25-3 in the first set before taking the next two sets 25-12 and 25-11.
Carolyn Myka finished with 14 assists and was responsible for six service points. Chelsea Lamphere led the Bears’ front line with eight kills as Sarah Martin got six kills. Savannah Penoyer and Bella Cutrie had three kills apiece as Gabriella Cutrie had six digs and Jada Masciat had three blocks.
This was the first of four matches in six days that were scheduled. Chittenango was supposed to face Weedsport on Wednesday, but weather postponed it and it will get made up this week.
At Rome Free Academy on Friday night, Chittenango did play and was quite impressive from the outset, getting a 25-20, 25-15, 25-14 sweep of the Black Knights.
Lamphere’s nine kills led a well-balanced front line as Penoyer got seven kills and seven digs. Cutrie added five kills and nine assists, helping Myka (15 assists) on the back line.
Then Chittenango met Onondaga Saturday after their Dec. 19 match was snowed out. Against a 7-2 Tigers side, the Bears were quite impressive, prevailing 25-18 in the first set and 25-21 in each of the next two sets.
Myka, earning 15 assists, was helped on the back line by Lily Callahan, who had eight assists and eight digs. Cutrie got seven assists and seven digs.
Up front, Penoyer earned 11 kills and 10 digs, with Lamphere getting six kills and three blocks. Martin put up five kills and earned 11 digs. Masciat finished with four kills, six digs and two blocks.
Chittenango’s boys team started its season Dec. 30 with the “Spiking In the New Year” Tournament at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, where the host Red Devils won the tournament, but the Bears’ Brandon Turner was named to the All-Tournament team.
League matches got underway a week later, with Chittenango taking on Mount Markham and earning a tough 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 victory over the Mustangs.
Brandon Turner had 10 kills, with Alek Reymond getting eight kills and Seth Kimball adding five kills. Tom McIntosh had 17 assists as, defensively, Caleb Barnard had 23 digs, Kimball got 13 digs and Reymond had 10 digs.
Visiting Sauquoit Valley two nights later, the Bears played four sets that all ended with 25-22 margins, but Chittenango only won the second as the Indians claimed the other three sets to prevail.
Kimball still had 11 kills and 20 digs, with Turner earning 12 kills and 12 assists. Reymond added seven kills as McIntosh had 19 assists and Barnard finished with 23 digs.
