Though most of the two weeks of the holiday school break involved rest and practice for the area’s pair of boys swim teams, there was one important competition taking place.
Fayetteville-Manlius and Christian Brothers Academy each took part in last Friday’s Gary Griffin Sprint Invitational, named in honor of the late coach who helped found the Weedsport program, among many other accomplishments.
The Hornets did best in the 200-yard freestyle relay, where Eric Bang, Quinn Smith, Ben Rabin and Lucas Wieres finished in one minute, 36.51 seconds, though far off the state meet-qualifying 1:29.48 from first-palce Liverpool.
Rabin earned third place in the 50 breaststroke in 30.93 seconds as Richard Wan was fifth in 31.71 seconds. Smith finished fourth in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.43, with Wieres fifth in 1:01.93.
But Wieres did best in the 100 butterfly, getting third place in 57.01 seconds as Jason Porter was sixth (58.60). Wiers also was sixth (52.07 seconds) in the 100 freestyle, Smith taking fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.22.
F-M’s 200 medley relay team of Wan, Porter, Eddie Elliot and Max Vidakovic finished fourth in 1:48.40. Porter got sixth place in the 100 individual medley in 1:02.68 and eighth place in the 100 freestyle in 54.58 seconds, with Wan eighth and Rabin 10th in the 100 IM.
Conlan Rourke finished went 51.71 seconds for fifth place in the 100 freestyle and was seventh in the 50 freestyle in 23.60 seconds, adding a seventh in the 100 IM in 1:03.37.
Nate Wales, 10th in the 100 freestyle, got sixth place in the 100 backstroke in 1:02.84 as Bobby Diel (1:06.28) was ninth, matching his finish in the 100 butterfly (1:02.24). Colby Porter tied for sixth in the 50 butterfly in 26.11 seconds.
And all of this leads to J-D/CBA and F-M meeting each other next Thursday, two days after the Hornets face New Hartford at Cazenovia College and the Red Rams host Fulton.
