What had already proven a superb season for Cazenovia High School’s Morgan Kingsley on the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team culminated last weekend with her appearance in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.
The state meet began Friday at Ithaca College, with Kingsley competing on her own in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke, along with F-M’s 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
It was in the 200-yard freestyle relay that Kingsley earned her best finish. Working with Chittenango High School’s Hannah Kellogg, along with Georgia Langan and Emma Luttrell, the Hornets would take 17th place.
In the preliminary round, F-M posted one minute, 40.29 seconds, slightly off the 1:39.90 it had earlier this season. But in the finals a day later, the Hornets improved to 1:39.58 as Sleepy-Hastings-Edgemont-Irvin (Section I) won in 1:35.82.
Moving to the 400 freestyle relay, Kingsley, Kellogg and Luttrell paired with Lindsay Mathews would finish 21st in the opening round in 3:40.58 but then go nearly three seconds faster in the finals, finishing in 3:37.67.
That helped F-M win its consolation race and place 21st overall, but up to 14th place when only counting NYSPHSAA teams. Horace Greeley, also from Section I, won the NYSPHSAA race in 3:29.11 and Sacred Heart won the overall race in 3:26.46.
On her own, Kingsley swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.14, off her season-best 1:08.37 to finish 45th overall, while in the 50 freestyle she went 25.14 seconds, an event where she had gone 24.87 seconds this fall, good for 41st place.
