Tested plenty during a long list of tournaments through September and October, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team still towered over all of its local opposition.
The Bees, who sat at no. 5 in the latest biweekly state Class AA rankings put out by the New York Volleyball Coaches Association, had another impressive effort last Tuesday night, turning back Cicero-North Syracuse in three sets.
Despite its 11-2 record going into the match, the Northstars only were close in the second set, which B’ville still claimed 25-22 after it won the opener 25-18 and before a 25-8 romp in the third set.
Jenna Garvey earned 20 assists and Summer McClintic added 13 assists, to go with four kills, two blocks, three digs and two aces. Garvey produced three aces.
Rileigh Kimball put away 13 kills and added eight digs. Kyrah Wilbur and Sophia Kordas had seven kills apiece, with Brooke Clute contributing five digs. For C-NS, Jennifer Carl had 14 assists and seven digs. Hannah Mingle got 12 digs and Aurora Lesinski had eight kills
Two nights later, B’ville honored its eight seniors – McClintic, Megan Brecht, Rileigh Kimball, Sophia Kordas, Maddie Shuler, Jenna Wallace, Taylor LaPage and Alex Molini – and put together a 25-6, 25-8, 25-11 sweep of Nottingham.
McClintic and Kimball both had six aces in their last regular-season appearance, as did Garvey, who matched McClintic’s total of eight assists. Brecht got three kills, with Katie Naprawa adding four kills as Mattison Phinney earned five digs. Brecht, Sydney Aiello and Emma LeGault had three aces apiece.
In boys volleyball, Baldwinsville, who got a big five-set win over Fayetteville-Manlius on Oct. 16, played twice in the week that followed, and lost to the area’s top sides.
Jamesville-DeWitt got past the Bees 25-19, 25-22, 25-19 last Monday night, this despite Aidan Priest’s nine kills and Bradford Doubleday’s eight kills.
Carter Healey got 16 assists, with John Morrissey earning six digs. Priest and Doubleday had four digs apiece as Brevin Scullion gave J-D 18 assists, five blocks and four digs, with Matt Cieplicki earning nine kills.
Then the Bees had to match up again with Liverpool on Wednesday night, and it turned out just like it did when they first met Sept. 26, going to five sets and B’ville ending up on the wrong side of the decision.
What made it more frustrating was that, after dropping the first two sets 25-12 and 25-23, the Bees had stormed back, claiming the third 25-16 and the fourth in a tense 25-23 battle. Yet in the final-set race to 15, B’ville faltered and Liverpool won it 15-7.
Priest had earned 18 kills and eight digs, with Doubleday getting 12 kills and seven digs. Curtiss Hey had nine kills and four blocks as Healey produced 32 assists.
For Liverpool, Anthony Pezzino led the way with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Quinn Moore had 33 assists, four aces and 16 digs and Jagger Alberici got 28 digs.B’ville’s boys would meet Central Square Tuesday night to conclude its regular season.
