Some more excitement awaited boys volleyball teams from Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt last week, even if their results did not exactly match expectations.
F-M, in particular, met frustration in last Wednesday’s match against Baldwinsville. After losing the first set 25-20, the Hornets pulled out a tight second set 27-25 and then won the third 25-18.
But the Bees made a rally of its own, getting the fourth set 25-21 and, in a fifth-set race to 15, claiming the match 15-11 as Carter Healey earned 43 assists, feeding it to the likes of Aidan Priest (17 kills) and Bradford Doubleday (14 kills).
On the Hornets’ side, Andersen Fuller led with 13 kills, just ahead of Cyrus Felton’s total of 10 kills. Isaac Frechette and Devin Kapral each got four kills as Aidan Liddell finished with 30 assists.
J-D, meanwhile, had an impressive effort against visiting Oswego, improving to 7-4 on the season by claiming three close sets over the Buccaneers 25-20, 25-21, 25-23.
Matt Cieplicki put away 15 kills, while Kenny Hildreth had five kills and Josh Duby got four kills. Working on the back line, Brevin Scullion produced 34 assists.
Then, in Friday’s match against Liverpool, J-D won again, a 25-23, 25-14, 25-16 decision where Scullion’s 22 assists helped set up 11 kills for Cieplicki and seven kills for Kemmis.
Moving to girls volleyball, Fayetteville-Manlius carried an 11-3 record into last Thursday’s match at West Genesee, a team it swept back on Sept. 18.
But the Wildcats turned it around at home, pulling out the first set 26-24 and the second 25-17. Though F-M dominated the third set 25-9 and got within two points of stretching the match to five, WG claimed another 26-24 decision in the fourth to end it.
Harper Stoppacher gained 11 kills, with Kendra Broddus and Juliana Myagkota each adding seven kills, Myagkota getting six dig. Anna Williams added five kills as Morgan Napier earned 28 assists and Nina Avery had nine digs.
For the Wildcats, Anna Snyder had 24 assists, Mackenzie Winn earned 24 digs and Brynn Zajac (11 kills) and Isabella Allen (nine kills) led the front line.
Before that, Bishop Grimes hosted Altmar-Parish-Williamstown last Tuesday night and put together a 25-16, 25-14, 25-23 sweep of the Rebels.
Only the third set proved close as Izzy Kinsey finished with five kills, five aces and five digs, and Bella D’Andrea added four kills. Feeding them, Lexi Emmi produced 12 assists as Maddie Mowers earned eight digs. D’Andrea and Abby Clapper had three aces apiece.
Then Grimes lost in four sets to Jordan-Elbridge 25-18, 20-25, 25-7, 25-18 on Thursday night. Emmi had 13 assists and eight digs, with Mowers adding 19 digs. Kinsey and Ajok Ater each earned four kills as D’Andrea got four kills.
